Many golfers, including myself, first swung a club while trying to keep up with family members on the course. I vividly remember my initial swings on a crowded range during a Father’s Day outing. Although I didn’t immediately fall in love with golf, the experience laid the foundation for a unique bond with my father and sparked my future passion for the game.
Golf has a remarkable way of connecting us. Whether caddying for junior events or receiving support from my dad along the ropes during college tournaments, I’ve amassed numerous memories on the course. In time, each round became a gift, deepening our family connection. So, when I discovered an exciting opportunity to compete alongside my dad in a new tournament, I couldn’t resist.
Enter The Generation Cup, an innovative golf event hosted by Omni Hotels and Resorts in collaboration with the PGA of America. This tournament aims to unite families through friendly competition at the beautiful Omni PGA Frisco Resort in Texas. Spanning three divisions—grandparent/grandchild, parent/child (or aunt/uncle and niece/nephew), and PGA Professional/generational family member—this event celebrates the joy of family and the love for golf.
To qualify for this thrilling tournament, teams of two had to compete in one of twelve qualifying events held at Omni resorts nationwide. The best teams in both net and gross categories progressed to the finals. With my father and I securing a place in the inaugural national championship, it promised to be an unforgettable experience, regardless of the outcome.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by enthusiastic staff members who made us feel at home. The Omni PGA Frisco Resort is nothing short of spectacular, boasting three world-class golf courses, luxurious accommodations, and a plethora of dining options. The property is also home to The Dance Floor, a nearly two-acre putting course open to the public, creating a sense of community and connection among families.
As I strolled around the resort, the lively atmosphere was immediately evident. Local families flocked to the putting green, sharing laughs and enjoying quality time together. This setting redefined what a golf course could do—create a vibrant hub for community engagement while fostering the game’s growth.
The tournament kicked off with a welcome dinner beside The Dance Floor, followed by a spirited round on The Swing, a 10-hole par-3 course featuring designs from the acclaimed architects Gil Hanse and Beau Welling. The psychological and emotional closeness of the event was already palpable, as we gathered with other participants, forming friendships under the warm Texas sky.
Our first official day of competition arrived, and we eagerly teed off at Fields Ranch West. The format featured a two-person best-ball shamble, where players’ tee positions were adapted according to age and skill level. This thoughtful structure aimed to create a fair environment across generations, successfully leveling the playing field even against a talented 10-year-old we paired with.
After an exhilarating round, the tournament offered access to a tour-level recovery room featuring the same equipment used by professionals like Rory McIlroy and Tony Finau. For an even deeper relaxation experience, players could indulge in spa services, adding a touch of luxury to the competition. As I recuperated, I looked forward to what the evening would bring.
Networking with fellow competitors rounded out our night. One father-daughter team struck up a warm friendship with us, bonding over shared experiences. A highlight of the evening was a fireside chat with Beau Welling, who shared insights into his design philosophy for Fields Ranch West. The evening was both informative and heartwarming, reiterating that golf is a catalyst for building relationships and communities.
By the tournament’s final round, we found ourselves on the challenging Fields Ranch East, designed with precision and skill to set the stage for the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. This course was no walk in the park; accuracy and strategy became paramount. Yet, we were graced with an exceptional caddie whose local knowledge helped us navigate its intricacies, leading to fantastic shots and a few treasured birdies.
As we made our way down the 18th fairway, my emotions surged. The realization that our weekend was concluding struck me profoundly. I cherished the precious time spent with my father, who, as life gets busier, I find it difficult to golf with regularly. This tournament had allowed us to reconnect, and I knew we weren’t alone; smiles abounded from other families celebrating the connection and joy The Generation Cup had fostered.
