The Unexpected Coolness of America’s Hottest Golf Course

Death Valley National Park, located in California, is home to the Furnace Creek Golf Course, the lowest-elevation course in the world. Surrounded by salt flats, sand dunes, and unique rock formations, the course is a literal oasis in the middle of the Mojave Desert. This unlikely spot for a golf course has roots dating back to the late 1920s when a three-hole routing was roughed out by the caretaker of a date-palm orchard as an amenity to a new hotel. The expansion of the course to 18 holes took place over several decades, culminating in a par-70 layout that is longer due to its sunken elevation.

The Furnace Creek Golf Course is part of the Furnace Creek Resort, which includes the Inn at the Oasis and the Ranch at the Oasis. The resort offers a wide range of amenities and activities, including a spring-fed swimming pool, wellness sanctuary, horseback riding, bike rentals, and guided stargazing. While some activities are seasonal, golfing at Furnace Creek is available year-round with safety precautions in place during the hottest months. The course record is 61, and players can expect a unique experience as they navigate the flat grounds and nuanced greens with views of the Panamint mountains in the distance.

The name “Furnace Creek” has a storied history dating back to the 1860s, reflecting the extreme temperatures experienced in the valley. When playing at Furnace Creek, golfers may encounter scorching temperatures and winds that can feel like an oven blast. However, drinking stations and tamarisk trees lining the fairways provide relief, offering a sense of solitude and the beauty of the desert landscape. Players can enjoy a round of golf unlike any other in the world and often find themselves with the course mostly to themselves, adding to the unique experience of playing in Death Valley.

Despite the extreme heat and challenging conditions, golfers are drawn to Furnace Creek for the opportunity to play in a one-of-a-kind setting. The history of the course and its connection to the area’s economic development add to its appeal, making it a must-visit destination for golf enthusiasts. With its stunning scenery, challenging layout, and year-round availability, Furnace Creek Golf Course offers a memorable and unforgettable golfing experience for players of all skill levels. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer looking for a new challenge or a casual player seeking a unique adventure, playing a round at Furnjsonery into an unforgettable golfing experienceace Creek should be on every golfer’s bucket list.
