The 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 was a nostalgic moment for golf fans, as it brought together two legends of the game, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. Twenty-five years ago, Woods and Mickelson were key figures in the drama of the 1999 U.S. Open at the same venue. This time around, however, they were aging players who struggled to make an impact on the leaderboard. Woods, 48, shot a second-round 73 to miss the cut, while Mickelson, who turns 54, also struggled with scores of 79 and 76.

In 1999, Mickelson pushed Payne Stewart to the 72nd hole of the U.S. Open, ultimately finishing as the runner-up. Woods also contended that weekend, finishing tied for third. Since then, Woods has had varying success at Pinehurst No. 2, with runner-up finishes in 2005 and a missed cut in 2014. Mickelson, on the other hand, has never won a U.S. Open and has struggled to find success in the tournament.

Despite their age and past successes, both Woods and Mickelson struggled to contend at the 2024 U.S. Open. Woods, who has three U.S. Open titles among his 15 majors, showed signs of improvement in his game but was unable to overcome the challenges of Pinehurst. Mickelson, on the other hand, continued his streak of underwhelming performances in the U.S. Open, with no top-10 finishes since 2013.

Throughout the tournament, other major champions also struggled with the difficult conditions at Pinehurst No. 2. Players like Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson, and Jason Day missed the cut, highlighting the challenging nature of the U.S. Open. Despite the tough competition, Woods remains determined to continue his competitive golf career, with plans to play in a few more tournaments before the end of the season.

Looking ahead, Woods is uncertain about his future in major championships, including the U.S. Open and The Open Championship. As he approaches the final stages of his golf career, Woods remains focused on playing competitive golf and enjoying the moments he has left on the course. As for Mickelson, his quest for a U.S. Open title continues, with hopes of making a breakthrough in the tournament that has eluded him for so long. The 2024 U.S. Open was a reminder of the enduring legacies of Woods and Mickelson in the world of golf, as they continue to inspire fans and players alike with their skill and passion for the game.
