The Charles Schwab Cup Championship on the PGA Tour Champions circuit is approaching, and there is more drama this year compared to previous years. Unlike last year when Steve Stricker had a commanding lead and was able to skip the playoff events and still claim the cup, this time there are 10 golfers who have a chance to win it. Of these 10, four are considered long shots, while the top six contenders can secure the Cup by winning the tournament at Phoenix Country Club.

The tournament is a four-round, 72-hole, no-cut event. The winner of the tournament will win the Charles Schwab Cup Championship, while the season-long champion will be crowned as the Charles Schwab Cup champion. The tournament operates differently from the PGA Tour’s post-season, where the Tour Championship winner is declared the FedEx Cup champion. In this event, it is possible for a different golfer to win the tournament while another golfer captures the season title.

Among the 10 golfers in contention, some are more likely to claim the cup than others. Ernie Els, who has been leading the points standings for the last 12 tournaments, is a top contender. Steven Alker, who won the tournament last year and the Cup two years ago, is another strong contender. Other players in the running include Stephen Ames, Padraig Harrington, Y.E. Yang, and Richard Green. The PGA Tour Champions stats crew identifies Els and Alker as the two most likely contenders to win the Cup.

Various top contenders are expressing their thoughts on the upcoming championship. Els emphasized the importance of winning the Charles Schwab Cup despite leading the money list for a long time. Alker is looking forward to defending his title as the defending champion of the tournament last year. Harrington, who won the last PGA Tour Champions event, understands the scenarios well and acknowledges the tough competition.

Some other contenders for the Cup include K.J. Choi, Ricardo Gonzalez, Paul Broadhurst, and Jerry Kelly. While they have a chance to win, they need to perform exceptionally well in the tournament and have other top contenders finish further down the leaderboard. On the other hand, there are several golfers who mathematically cannot win the Cup, including Stewart Cink, Bernhard Langer, Vijay Singh, and many others.

Overall, the competition is heating up as the Charles Schwab Cup Championship approaches. With only one player skipping the tournament and the top contenders vying for the coveted cup, the stakes are high. For players like Harrington, who are aware of the limited opportunities to claim the Cup, this may be their best chance to emerge victorious. As the tournament unfolds at Phoenix Country Club, fans can expect an exciting and competitive showdown among the top golfers in contention.
