Establishing a solid pre-shot routine is crucial for any golfer looking to improve their game and execute shots consistently. Kellie Stenzel, a GOLF Top 100 Teacher, emphasizes the importance of having a repeatable routine before every shot to ensure proper fundamentals are in place. While there are various ways to go about a pre-shot routine, Stenzel highlights a few key steps that she teaches her students to help them achieve success on the course.

One essential step in a pre-shot routine is taking aim. Stenzel advises golfers to stand directly behind the ball and look down the line toward their target. Choosing an intermediate target on the ground between the ball and target can also help with alignment and consistency. By focusing on hitting the ball directly over this spot, golfers can improve their aim and increase their chances of hitting the target accurately.

After selecting a target, golfers should step into their setup while keeping their focus on the intermediate target on the ground. Ensuring that the leading edge of the club is perpendicular to this spot can help with alignment and consistency in their setup. For those struggling with alignment, Stenzel recommends using training aids like an alignment mirror to practice proper alignment techniques.

Gripping the club correctly is another crucial step in the pre-shot routine. Since the hands are the only connection point between the golfer and the club, getting the grip right is essential for a successful shot. After bending forward from the hips, golfers should allow their arms to dangle freely in front of them before gripping the club. For additional help with the grip, Stenzel suggests checking out her article on the subject for more guidance.

Proper foot alignment is also essential for executing a solid shot. Golfers should ensure that their feet are aligned correctly with the target and adjust them if necessary. The position of the feet relative to the ball can significantly impact the shot, so it’s crucial to have the ball in the correct position for the desired shot. By taking care of these fundamental steps, golfers can set themselves up for success before swinging the club confidently.

Before taking the shot, golfers should take one last look at the target and lock in for the shot. This final check can serve as a trigger to start the swing and signal to the brain that it’s time to execute the shot. By establishing a consistent and repeatable pre-shot routine, golfers can approach each shot with confidence knowing they have set themselves up for success. Stenzel’s emphasis on the importance of a reliable pre-shot routine can help golfers of all skill levels improve their game and consistency on the course.
