In the past decade, there has been a significant trend in golf development towards the creation of short courses at resorts and private clubs. These non-traditional layouts, such as par-3 courses, offer a fun and fast-paced experience for guests and members. Recognizing the popularity of short courses, Golfweek’s Best introduced a ranking of these layouts in 2023. This ranking is divided into two categories: public-access and private courses.

The focus of this article is on the top private short courses that offer a unique golfing experience. These courses are not traditional in length or par, and prioritize enjoyment and design over traditional course ratings. As part of the ranking process, raters were asked to submit an overall score based on their enjoyment of the course’s design and environment. The individual ratings were then averaged to determine each course’s final ranking.

To qualify for this ranking, the courses had to be shorter than 2,700 yards if they were nine holes, compared to traditional courses that typically measure 3,100 to 3,800 yards. Each course on the list received a minimum of 10 votes from raters across the golfing community. Over the past 18 months, thousands of votes were collected and compiled to determine the final rankings.

The ranking includes each course’s average rating on a points scale of 1 to 10, as well as details such as their locations, designers, opening year, number of holes, total length, and par. This comprehensive information provides golf enthusiasts with a thorough understanding of the top private short courses in the industry. By highlighting the unique features and characteristics of each course, players can make informed decisions about where to experience the best short course golf.

Many of the top private short courses offer a challenging yet enjoyable experience for golfers of all skill levels. These courses prioritize creativity and strategic play, often incorporating elements of traditional course design in a condensed format. By focusing on the overall enjoyment of the course, rather than strict adherence to traditional standards, these short courses have captured the attention of golfers looking for a fresh and exciting golfing experience.

In conclusion, the rise of short courses in the golf industry has led to an increased focus on fun and fast-paced golf experiences. The ranking of the top private short courses highlights the creativity and diversity of these non-traditional layouts. By providing golfers with a unique and memorable golfing experience, these short courses are shaping the future of the game and attracting players from around the world. Whether you are a seasoned golfer or a beginner looking to improve your skills, the top private short courses offer something for everyone.
