The Travelers Championship came to a chaotic end as environmental activists disrupted play on the 18th green during the final round. Scottie Scheffler, Tom Kim, and Akshay Bhatia were the final group in contention, with Scheffler leading by a stroke as they approached the 18th green at TPC River Highlands. Five activists from the climate activism group, Extinction Rebellion, stormed the green, spraying colored powder or paint on the putting surface. Play was suspended as authorities apprehended the protesters, who were wearing shirts that read “No golf on a dead planet.”

The players, especially Bhatia, expressed shock and fear at the sudden disruption caused by the protesters. The incident occurred as Scheffler was preparing to putt for birdie, with Kim also having a chance to tie for the lead. The chaos took the focus away from the competition and left both players bewildered. CBS commentator Jim Nantz described the scene as the protesters emerged from the crowd and ran onto the green, creating a tense atmosphere around the 18th hole.

The Cromwell Police Department quickly detained the protesters, who were chanting anti-golf slogans, and the situation was brought under control. Extinction Rebellion later claimed responsibility for the protest and stated their reasons for the disruption. Despite the disturbance, the 18th green was not significantly damaged aside from the paint and powder left by the activists. PGA Tour officials and course maintenance staff worked quickly to clean up and address the situation.

After the green was cleaned, Bhatia was granted relief from the abnormal course conditions caused by the paint and powder. He two-putted for par to finish the tournament at 18 under, while Scheffler missed his birdie putt and Kim made his to force a playoff. Tour officials decided to cut a new hole for the playoff on the 18th green due to the visible marks left by the activists. Scheffler ultimately won the playoff, securing his sixth victory of the season and 12th PGA Tour career win in a dramatic and unprecedented finish.

The incident at the Travelers Championship marked another bizarre turn of events in the world of golf, adding to a year already filled with unusual news involving top players and unexpected disruptions. The players and officials handled the situation with professionalism and adaptability, ensuring that the tournament was completed despite the chaos. The actions of Extinction Rebellion drew attention to their cause, sparking discussion about the intersection of environmental activism and sporting events. Overall, the finish of the Travelers Championship will be remembered as a unique and challenging chapter in the history of the sport.
