Tyrrell Hatton takes advantage of rules loophole to compete in this week’s DP World Tour event at The Belfry

Tyrrell Hatton, a well-known European Ryder Cup player, has surprised many by participating in this week’s Betfred British Masters at The Belfry even though he has been competing in the LIV Golf League events since joining at the beginning of the year. Despite not playing in regular DP World Tour events since January, Hatton has been performing well in the LIV events, with five top-10 finishes and one victory in Nashville in June. The 32-year-old Englishman has made $10.6 million in individual earnings so far and has been part of four LIV victories in team events in 2024.

The situation surrounding Hatton’s participation in both the LIV Golf League and the DP World Tour is both simple and complex. While he continues to be a DP World Tour member and is technically allowed to enter events on the Old World circuit, playing in LIV events that clash with DP World Tour tournaments could result in sanctions under the tour’s rules and regulations. These penalties could include fines and suspensions from future events. However, Hatton is currently able to participate in the Betfred British Masters due to a pending appeal against sanctions imposed on him for breaching the Conflicting Tournament Regulation of the DP World Tour.

Similar to other players who jumped from the DP World Tour to LIV in 2022, Hatton’s eligibility to compete in the Betfred British Masters is based on his current membership status and his compliance with any previously imposed sanctions. Players like Henrik Stenson, Ian Poulter, and Lee Westwood have also faced similar situations and were able to compete until an arbitration body ruled in favor of the tour and upheld its right to enforce disciplinary sanctions on the “rebel” players. As of now, the outcome of Hatton’s appeal process is still pending, and any fines levied against him are temporarily stayed.

Despite the ongoing acrimony between the LIV Golf League and the DP World Tour, Hatton’s participation in the Betfred British Masters showcases the complexities of his dual membership and the regulatory framework surrounding conflicting tournament schedules. As one of the accomplished players in golf, Hatton’s ability to navigate these challenges highlights his resilience and determination to continue competing at the highest level. Whether he will face further sanctions or be able to fully focus on one tour in the future remains to be seen, but his presence in events like the Betfred British Masters adds intrigue to the golfing landscape.
