Ryder Cup Showdown: Who’s Better – Americans or Europeans?

As golf aficionados around the globe gear up for the Ryder Cup at the legendary Bethpage Black, some number-crunching enthusiasts at Shot Scope have taken on a burning question: Who really rocks the golf scene more—Americans or Europeans?

We all know the Ryder Cup brings out our utmost passion, sometimes bordering on ridiculousness. Sure, the Europeans might have given us this glorious game, but Americans have taken it to the next level by hollering “Get in the hole!” from impossible distances and transforming golf carts into rolling party hubs. But what happens when you gather 7,000 amateur golfers—3,500 from each side of the pond—and throw them into a data-driven battle?

Enter Shot Scope! They collected stats from golfers across six handicap levels (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30) to finally settle the debate. Think of this whole exercise like a Ryder Cup but with a lot more three-putts and lost Pro V1s.

Round 1: Driving Distance

Winner: USA (USA! USA!)

Here’s where Team America can puff their chests out a little. The average driving distance for Americans was 246 yards, compared to Europe’s 230 yards. That’s a hefty 16 yards difference! This could explain why American golfers sport so much confidence—even when they card a respectable 95.

The driving stats came from Shot Scope’s Performance Average, which cuts out those wild outliers (sorry, that one time you crushed a 320-yard drive doesn’t count). It reveals what a solidly struck shot truly delivers.

Round 2: Driving Accuracy

Winner: Europe (dammit)

Hold on just a second—Team Europe strikes back! They find the fairway 49% of the time, just beating the Americans’ 48%. Sure, it’s a measly 1% difference, but in golf, where we’ll squabble over whether that putt was actually 2 feet, 11 inches or three feet, that margin is everything.

Round 3: Lost Balls Off the Tee

Winner: Europe

This round stings a bit for Team USA. Europeans lose just 1.08 balls per round, while Americans average 1.62. That’s a difference of 0.54 fewer lost balls, which equates to about $2 saved per round for Pro V1s that won’t surprisingly reappear in your bag.

Round 4: Greens in Regulation

Winner: USA

Team USA strikes back with some better iron play, hitting six greens in regulation per round (34%) versus Europe’s five (27%). This is where that extra driving distance reaps its rewards—those shorter irons make a genuine difference, who would’ve thought?

Round 5: Proximity to Pin from 50 Yards

Result: Tie

So here’s a plot twist! Both teams average 33 feet from the pin on shots from 50 yards. It leaves us wondering if they both figured out the secret to mastering wedge play or if everyone’s just equally not-so-great at it.

Round 6: Proximity to Pin from 100 Yards

Winner: Europe

Europe takes this round by a nose, averaging 51 feet from the pin compared to America’s 54 feet. Not exactly sticking it close, but hey—every foot counts, right? Europeans seem to excel at judging that tricky in-between wedge distance.

Round 7: Up-and-Down Percentage

Winner: Europe

When it comes to scrambling, Europeans excel, getting up and down 33% of the time, while Americans hit 30%. Given how many greens both teams are missing, this short game skill could save the day, transforming potential doubles back into manageable bogeys.

Round 8: Sand Saves

Winner: USA

Americans snag this round by the narrowest of margins—18% compared to Europe’s 17%. Both teams struggle a bit when it comes to escaping the sand, but at least we can claim victory in something sandy that doesn’t involve a beach volleyball court.

Round 9: Three-Putt Avoidance

Winner: USA

Here’s some relief! Team USA averages 2.38 three-putts per round compared to Europe’s 2.42. Yes, my fellow Americans, we’re a smidge better at keeping it together on the greens. Progress!

Round 10: Short Putt Percentage

Winner: Europe

Europeans have us beat here, making 54% of their short putts compared to the USA’s 51%. When the stakes are high and every putt matters in match play, this slim edge can make the difference between a victory dance and tossing your putter into the nearest pond.

Round 11: Birdies Per Round

Winner: USA

America edges this category, pulling in 0.9 birdies per round, while Europe lags a tad behind at 0.7. Not exactly record-breaking numbers, but when one less than a birdie can shift momentum, you’d better believe every little bit counts.

Round 12: Double Bogeys or Worse

Winner: Europe

In a slightly painful wrap-up, Europeans steer clear of the big numbers, averaging 3.38 double bogeys or worse per round to America’s 4.13. They clearly avoid the round killers that leave you questioning why golf ever entered your life.

The Final Tally

So, here’s the scoop based on Shot Scope’s 12 matchups: Team Europe’s amateurs snagged a narrow 6.5 to 5.5 victory over Team USA. As an American, I can’t help but feel a bit skeptical about this data and how it doesn’t account for things like hot dog consumption and good old-fashioned freedom.

It indeed came down to the wire—much like we expect at Bethpage Black. Maybe this suggests we’re in for another nail-biter or shows that amateur golfers on both sides of the Atlantic do share a remarkable talent for finding creative ways to avoid breaking 80.

In match play, the key stats—hitting fairways, finding greens, and sinking those short putts—slightly favored the Europeans. However, Americans showed strengths in raw power and managing to fend off a few extra three-putts.

What It All Means

If you use a Shot Scope performance tracking product—be it a GPS watch or a laser rangefinder—your data likely played a role in this epic showdown. Were you part of the winning team?

Looking ahead to the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, if amateur golfers are this evenly matched, we may just have one unforgettable weekend ahead. Fingers crossed for fewer lost balls and less drama with three-putts than what we’ve seen in this amateur version!
