USGA Announces Major Alteration to 16th Hole Before US Women’s Open Championship Finale

The 2024 US Women’s Open has proven to be a challenging event with the leaders only at four-under heading into the final round at Lancaster Country Club. To shake up the closing stages of the championship, the USGA made a drastic change to the penultimate par 4, the 16th hole. The hole, typically measured at 340-351 yards, was reduced to just 239 yards for the final round. This change is expected to lead to more birdies and possibly even eagles as it is now within reach for the average player.

Despite the 16th hole being drivable, not every player may choose to go for it in one due to the penal rough at Lancaster CC that could result in big numbers if they find themselves out of position. Nelly Korda, who struggled on the 161-yard par 3 hole in the second round of the championship, knows the risks of errant shots at this course. After a difficult experience on the par 3 hole, Korda’s quest for a third Major was ultimately ruined.

The challenging nature of Lancaster CC was evident with 52 balls ending up in the water by the 13th hole and 10 holes leading to a worst score of triple-bogey on the first day alone. Despite the difficulties faced by players, Golf Channel analyst Mel Reid expressed admiration for the tough test that the course is providing at the US Women’s Open.

The change to the 16th hole on the final day of the championship created excitement and anticipation among players and fans alike. With the potential for more birdies and eagles, the leaderboard was set for a thrilling conclusion. The decision by the USGA to adjust the hole length added an element of strategy and risk-reward to the final round, testing the skills and decision-making of the players in contention.

As players navigated the challenges of the 16th hole and the rest of Lancaster CC, the competition intensified with each shot. The strategic layout of the course tested the players’ abilities to hit accurate shots and avoid the penalizing rough and hazards. The final round of the US Women’s Open showcased the resilience and skill of the competitors as they vied for the coveted title and prestigious Major championship.

In the end, the US Women’s Open at Lancaster Country Club provided a thrilling and challenging test for the top female golfers in the world. The changes made to the 16th hole added excitement and intrigue to the final round, resulting in a memorable conclusion to the championship. Despite the difficulties faced by players, the event highlighted the talent and determination of the competitors as they navigated the demanding course and battled for victory. The USGA’s decision to shake up the championship with a drastic change to the penultimate par 4 added a unique element to the event and created a memorable conclusion to the 2024 US Women’s Open.
