Exploring Cape Breton: A Golfer’s Paradise

Adjusting expectations can be a challenging endeavor, whether it concerns personal achievements, family milestones, or planning a dream golf trip. For avid golfers, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, is a treasure trove waiting to be explored. Last year, I embarked on what I believed would be a spectacular golf-themed cruise through Canada’s Maritimes. Offered by Expedition Experience, the 12-day “Fiddle & Sticks” voyage promised incredible golf on world-class courses, along with scenic stops in captivating locales such as Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Newfoundland, and, of course, the magic of Cape Breton. However, unexpected changes forced me to pivot, ultimately leading to an unforgettable travel adventure.

A Sudden Change in Plans

While waiting for my connecting flight in Toronto to Nova Scotia, I received a disheartening message from my friend, Breton Murphy. The cruise had been canceled due to an unforeseen logistical issue: our captain had unexpectedly departed for Central Europe. With the taste of salty air still fresh in my mind, and the prospect of playing at renowned courses like Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs just a stone’s throw away, Murphy and I abandoned our cruise plans. Instead, we opted for an adventurous road trip to Cape Breton, and I couldn’t have been more thrilled at the prospect.

Cape Breton: The Land of Golf

Murphy, my enthusiastic driver for the trip, hailed from Sydney—a quaint mining town on Cape Breton’s eastern shore—making him the perfect guide. His childhood was filled with sailing adventures and stunning views from the shores of Bras d’Or Lake, which added depth to our journey. For me, as a Pacific Northwesterner, experiencing Cape Breton’s golf offerings felt like stepping into a nature-infused version of Bandon Dunes. It was interesting to discover the connection between Cabot Links founder Ben Cowan-Dewar and Bandon Dunes creator Mike Keiser, showcasing our shared passion for exceptional golf.

The Birth of Cabot Golf

The partnership between Cowan-Dewar and Keiser paved the way for the renowned Cabot Links. After sightseeing at various locations around the Cabot Trail, which is a 186-mile scenic route circling Cape Breton Island, we uncovered a rich history of golf within the region. Notably, in 1939, famed golf architect Stanley Thompson designed Cape Breton Highland Links, a gem previously included on GOLF’s prestigious list of Top 100 Courses. This significant history offers an enticing backdrop for any golf-loving traveler.

Scenic Beauty and Cultural Richness

Adventuring through Cape Breton is not solely about golf; the breathtaking landscapes and vibrant local cultures are equally captivating. The remarkable Celtic Colours International Festival, held in early October, showcases the artistic spirit and musical legacy of the area, coinciding beautifully with the autumn foliage. Exploring this harmonious blend of cultural events and natural beauty only enhances the allure of visiting Cabot Cape Breton.

The Challenge of Cape Breton Highland Links

As we settled into our two-day golf schedule, we first set our sights on the highly regarded Cape Breton Highland Links. The direction of the course weaves through pine forests and leads to scenic coastal views. Its unique layout offers challenges at every turn—hidden hazards, beautiful carries over water, and breathtaking landscapes keep golfers on their toes. The combination of historically significant design and modern upgrades has enhanced this classic course.

Lesser-Known Gems: The Lakes at Ben Eoin

Before diving into the well-known Cabot courses, Murphy and I warmed up at The Lakes at Ben Eoin. Nestled on the beautiful Bras d’Or Lake, this underrated course offers picturesque vistas and charming challenges. With its mixture of forest-lined fairways and stunning water views, it served as an excellent precursor to the main events at Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs.

Masterpieces by the Sea: Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs

Arriving at Cabot Links, the excitement was palpable. This course flows beautifully along the Atlantic coastline. The challenges here are far from mundane, thanks to its deceptive blind shots and risk-reward holes that keep the game engaging. Raiding the majestic Toronto skyline is one thing, but navigating this course proves to be far more rewarding.

The Thrill of Cabot Cliffs

Just a stone’s throw away, Cabot Cliffs awaits, offering golfers a heart-pounding experience amongst its dramatic coastal scenery. Featuring multiple carries over water and expertly planned elevation changes, this course brings dynamism to every round. The striking views and engaging design make it a must-play for anyone serious about golf. Each hole commands respect, ensuring that no shot feels repetitive.

Closing Thoughts: An Unforgettable Journey

After finishing our rounds, we wrapped up the day at Cabot’s Whit’s Public House, reminiscing about the adventures we had on the golf course. Capri and I ended our day in Baddeck, a charming village on Bras d’Or Lake where we celebrated with beautiful views and amazing local cuisine. Collecting memories from this golf trip has opened my eyes to what Cape Breton has to offer.

A Future Golfing Expedition Awaits

With Expedition Experience’s assurance that the “Fiddle & Sticks” program will return in 2026, I feel compelled to prepare for my next adventure on this idyllic coastal paradise. Armed with memories and a newfound appreciation for Cape Breton’s golf scene, I’m ready to make the journey again, eager to explore the incredible courses and natural beauty this region has to offer. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or a curious traveler, Cape Breton is undoubtedly worth the trip.

In conclusion, if you harbor a deep love for golf, adventure, and cultural exploration, Cape Breton is your destination. The captivating landscapes, historic golf courses, and elegant communities make it a strong contender for your next dream golf trip. Don’t wait; plan your visit today and experience the charm and challenge of this stunning corner of the world.
