Why is a 65-year-old golfer playing in this week’s PGA Tour event? | Golf News and Tour Information

The Zurich Classic of New Orleans has become known as one of the PGA Tour’s unique events since switching to a team format in 2017. It is a tournament where unexpected faces often appear, such as the duo of David Duval and John Daly who finished dead last by 12 shots in a previous year. Another surprising pairing was Michael Thompson with a 43-year-old Army veteran who struggled to make cuts on the GPro Tour. PGA Tour pros who qualify for the event can partner with anyone with tour status or a sponsor’s exemption, leading to some interesting pairings. One notable participant this year is 65-year-old Russ Cochran, whose partner is Eric Cole, a player significantly younger than him.

Russ Cochran, a left-handed golfer, won his only PGA Tour event in 1991 and now primarily plays on the senior circuit. Cochran’s partner in the Zurich Classic, Eric Cole, is the reigning PGA Tour Rookie of the Year known for his consistent performances in tournaments. The unique aspect of their partnership is that Reed Cochran, Russ Cochran’s son, is serving as Cole’s caddie for the event. This family connection adds another interesting element to a tournament that already features several teams of brothers competing together. Despite his age, Cochran still competes occasionally on the PGA Tour Champions circuit, with his last win coming in 2013.

Cole, on the other hand, is a young and promising player who competes regularly on the PGA Tour. He recently made his Masters debut and finished 52nd, showing his potential as a rising star in the golf world. Cole has also secured a respectable T-33 finish at Hilton Head and currently sits at 39th in the FedEx Cup standings. Despite not having much success in his previous Zurich Classic appearance, where he missed the cut playing alongside Sam Saunders, Cole is determined to make an impact this time around. The contrast in experience and playing styles between Cochran and Cole adds an intriguing dynamic to their partnership in the tournament.

The Zurich Classic has a history of showcasing unconventional pairings and surprising results, with the team format offering a fresh perspective on traditional PGA Tour events. The tournament allows players to form partnerships with individuals who give them a chance to win, regardless of their background or experience level. This approach has led to memorable moments like the Koepka brothers competing together before both achieving success in professional golf. The inclusion of veteran players like Russ Cochran alongside young talents like Eric Cole highlights the diversity and excitement that the Zurich Classic offers to golf fans worldwide.

As the tournament unfolds, fans can expect to see a mix of established professionals and up-and-coming players vying for success on the challenging course. The dynamic between experienced golfers like Cochran and rising stars like Cole captures the essence of sportsmanship and competition that defines the Zurich Classic. With intriguing storylines and unexpected twists at every turn, this year’s event promises to deliver high-stakes drama and memorable moments for players and spectators alike. As the excitement builds towards the final rounds, all eyes will be on the diverse field of competitors as they strive to make their mark on this unique and engaging event on the PGA Tour calendar.
