Why Scottie Scheffler winning Player of the Year over Jon Rahm is not as controversial—or rigged—as it may appear

In a surprising turn of events, Scottie Scheffler was named the PGA Tour’s Player of the Year over Jon Rahm. While some speculated that the decision might have been influenced by Rahm’s rumored departure to the LIV Golf circuit, the truth is much simpler: players have different criteria for success than fans and media do. Scheffler, who won the award for a second consecutive year, had a successful season with wins at the WM Phoenix Open and the Players Championship, along with 17 top-10 finishes in 23 starts. On the other hand, Rahm had a strong year as well, winning four times, including the Masters, and reaching the number one ranking in the world.

Despite Rahm’s impressive accomplishments, Scheffler’s statistics painted a different picture. Scheffler led the tour in strokes gained/overall and SG/tee-to-green, with his scoring average ranking among the best in tour history. This statistical superiority, along with Scheffler’s remarkable consistency throughout the season, may have influenced the players’ decision in his favor. Additionally, Scheffler’s dominance in FedEx Cup points and earnings over Rahm might have played a role in his selection as Player of the Year.

While some may argue that Rahm was more deserving of the award, given his major victory and overall success in 2023, the players’ preference for statistical performance and consistency cannot be dismissed. The contrast between Rahm and Scheffler in various statistical categories, such as strokes gained and top-10 finishes, highlights the differing perspectives on what constitutes success in professional golf. Ultimately, the players’ choice of Scheffler as Player of the Year reflects their emphasis on statistical performance and financial success as key indicators of a player’s achievements.

The controversy surrounding the Player of the Year award extends beyond just Rahm and Scheffler, as other players like Ludvig Aberg were also snubbed in favor of more consistent performers. While fans and media may prioritize wins and major victories as the ultimate measure of success, the players’ reliance on statistical data and financial rewards as defining criteria reflects a unique viewpoint within the professional golf community. Despite the debate over the deserving recipient of the award, the players’ decision underscores their commitment to a fair and democratic selection process.

In the end, the Player of the Year award is subjective, with different players having varying opinions on what constitutes a successful season. While Rahm’s major victory and world number one ranking may have made him a strong contender, Scheffler’s statistical performance and consistency throughout the season ultimately earned him the honor. Whether the players’ decision aligns with the expectations of fans and media is open to interpretation, but it highlights the diverse perspectives within the professional golf community. The controversy surrounding the award serves as a reminder that success in golf can be defined in multiple ways, each with its unique merits and considerations.
