Xander Schauffele Falls Short at Torrey Pines, Ending PGA Tour’s 5th-Longest Streak

Xander Schauffele’s Remarkable Cut Streak Ends at Farmers Insurance Open

SAN DIEGO (AP) — In a notable development in professional golf, Xander Schauffele’s extraordinary run of 72 consecutive cuts made on the PGA Tour came to an abrupt halt at the Farmers Insurance Open. The streak, which stood as the fifth longest in PGA Tour history, ended when Schauffele missed an 8-foot birdie putt on his final hole, leaving him one shot short of qualifying for the weekend at Torrey Pines, his hometown course.

A Look Back at Schauffele’s Streak

  • Duration: 72 consecutive cuts
  • Historical Ranking: Fifth longest in PGA Tour history
  • Last Cut Missed: 2022 Masters

Schauffele reflected on the rare miss, stating, “I don’t like missing cuts — I think my record proves that. But it’s actually kind of nice, to be honest, if I was going to pick a spot. I get to hang out with my family. All said and done, it’s probably the best place to miss it.”

Current Standings in PGA Tour Cut Streaks

  1. Scottie Scheffler: 65 consecutive cuts (active)
    • Last cut missed: FedEx St. Jude Championship (August 2022)
  2. Xander Schauffele: 72 consecutive cuts (ended)
  3. Tiger Woods: 142 consecutive cuts (record)

Challenges Faced During the Tournament

Schauffele’s challenging performance at the Farmers Insurance Open can be attributed in part to issues with his driver equipment. Over the two days at Torrey Pines, he faced significant difficulties off the tee, hitting only three fairways on the South Course and finding the short grass just once on the North Course.

“The fact that I was close to the cut is pretty amazing,” he noted, despite the setbacks.

On the reachable par-4 seventh hole—where he found himself on the cut number—Schauffele’s tee shot rolled back into a challenging lie, leading to a bogey. Later, on his final hole, he faced a difficult flop shot that landed just 8 feet from the pin, but his birdie putt missed on the low side.

Reflecting on the Future

Reflecting on his performance, Schauffele expressed regret about not addressing his driver issues during the offseason. “Bogeying a drivable par 4 and parring two par 5s in the middle of the fairway, you deserve to miss the cut,” he remarked.

As the golf landscape continues to evolve, including the impact of leagues like LIV Golf, Schauffele’s focus remains on returning to form. With the longest active cut streak now held by Scheffler, fans of professional golf are keen to see how both players will navigate the upcoming challenges.

Conclusion

Xander Schauffele’s unbroken streak may have come to an end, but his determination and potential for future success remain intact. As he takes this opportunity to recharge with family, golf enthusiasts will undoubtedly be watching closely for his return to competitive form on the PGA Tour.
