Unlocking the Secrets of Tyrrell Hatton and Jon Rahm: Insights from the Driving Range

Tyrrell Hatton and Jon Rahm are two of the brightest stars in professional golf today. As a golf reporter, my recent encounter with them at Maridoe Golf Club in Dallas revealed a wealth of knowledge and insights that aspiring golfers and fans alike can benefit from. Here are the ten profound lessons I gleaned from watching these two pros warm up for their day on the course.

Lesson 1: Start with the Highest-Degree Wedges

One of the first things I observed was the way both Hatton and Rahm began their practice routines with their highest-degree wedges. Hatton explained that he likes to start hitting shots from 50-60 yards out. “I mainly start by trying to hit it anywhere from 50-60 yards and just get used to the club being in my hands again for the day,” he noted. This practice not only gets them warmed up but also tunes their feel for the game right from the start.

Lesson 2: Prioritize Physical Fitness

Interestingly, while these golfers are known for their incredible skills, they also prioritize fitness as part of their routine. Hatton candidly admitted that he wasn’t always a gym-goer but has made it a point to incorporate workouts into his routine as he’s gotten older. “As I’ve gotten older and stiffer and fatter, I’ve needed to start doing a bit more in the gym to get the rig ready to try and rotate," he said. This admission underscores the importance of physical fitness in prolonging a golfer’s career.

Lesson 3: Mastering Shot Distance Control

Hatton revealed an interesting strategy for controlling shot distances. He uses what’s called a “double grip-down” technique to shorten his swing without losing his swing mechanics. “I’ve always struggled to take distance off by slowing my swing down, so I started gripping down,” he explained. This technique helps him adjust his shots by nearly 12 yards without sacrificing his rhythm. Aspiring golfers could benefit immensely from mastering their distance control, an essential skill at any level.

Lesson 4: The Value of Competing with Fiery Players

Rahm shared a thought-provoking perspective on playing alongside other passionate competitors. He enjoys playing with golfers who share a similar intensity on the course, saying, “Whenever I play with somebody that might get a little bit more fired up… I see myself in it, I laugh.” Having a competitive spirit can be a double-edged sword; it can fuel motivation while also leading to frustration. Learning to harness that energy can be key in competitive golf.

Lesson 5: The Gentle Giant Persona

Despite skills that could easily intimidate, Rahm has a gentle personality off the course. Hatton humorously commented, “He looks scary, doesn’t he? But he’s like a big teddy bear.” This contrast sheds light on how perceptions can vary vastly. Understanding this duality adds depth to both golfers and serves as a reminder not to judge a book by its cover.

Lesson 6: Humor in the Game

Hatton’s sense of humor is just as sharp as his short game. Rahm suggested that Hatton should be recorded during practice rounds because he often delivers “gems” of humor. Humor in sports can be a great equalizer, helping players cope with stress and enjoy the game more. This element of fun is something often overlooked at the highest levels of competition.

Lesson 7: The Weight of Self-Criticism

When discussing his quality as a golfer, Hatton surprised me with his honesty. “That’s a weird question. I don’t think I am [so good],” he said. This kind of self-critical demeanor can be detrimental for many athletes, but it also keeps them grounded. It highlights the difference between external accolades and internal self-assessment, a struggle that many professionals face.

Lesson 8: A Positive Mindset Can Go a Long Way

On the flip side, Rahm discussed his more optimistic outlook. “I am, like, irrationally positive in my mind,” he explained, underscoring the importance of mental strength in golf. A positive mindset can often make the difference between a good round and a great one. Finding balance between self-criticism and self-belief is crucial for an athlete’s success.

Lesson 9: The Art of Straight Shots

During our session on the range, Hatton displayed an incredible ability to hit the ball straight. Rahm highlighted that for someone as skilled as Hatton, the goal is often to simplify a complex game. “Tyrrell’s only thought is to hit a straight, which is arguably the impossible play,” he said. Achieving control over ball direction is essential for any golfer looking to elevate their game.

Lesson 10: Evolving Swing Techniques

Rahm also provided insights into his evolving swing style, noting a shift in how he approaches drawing the ball. He explained that five years ago, he would have primarily hit fades; now he’s able to execute draws about 30% of the time. Understanding how to adapt swing mechanics based on conditions and course demands is invaluable for any golfer committed to improvement.

In conclusion, the wisdom shared by Tyrrell Hatton and Jon Rahm transcends the golf course. From the importance of physical fitness to mastering mental toughness, these lessons can help golfers at all levels.
