In a recent golf lesson with Kelan McDonagh, the director of instruction at Metedeconk National Golf Club, a struggling golfer named Josh learned that his grip could be the source of his swing troubles. Kelan used two drills to show Josh the importance of a proper grip, focusing on both his left and right hand positioning on the club. Josh’s left hand had been incorrectly placed, resulting in an open clubface and inconsistent shots. Through a drill with a device created by Mike Adams, Kelan demonstrated the relationship between the lead hand and the lower body, emphasizing the need for a square clubface at impact.

Similarly, Josh’s right hand grip was causing problems in his swing, with his thumb alignment disrupting his clubface control. By adjusting his right hand position, Josh was able to see immediate improvements in his swing path and clubface angle. Kelan used a drill where Josh hit quarter swings with just his right hand to illustrate the impact of a weaker grip on his shots. The adjustment helped Josh correct his over-the-top move and create a more consistent ball flight.

Another key aspect of the grip lesson was the positioning of the club in the hands. Josh had been gripping the club with his palms, leading to a loss of control and accuracy in his shots. Kelan advised Josh to move the club more towards his fingers, mimicking the natural grip used when throwing a ball. By holding the club in the fingers, golfers can maintain control over the clubface and improve their shot-making ability.

Kelan also addressed the issue of grip pressure, emphasizing the importance of finding a balance between soft and hard pressure. By comparing the grip to a see-saw, Kelan explained that gripping too tightly can restrict swing motion, while gripping too lightly can result in loss of control. Finding the right amount of grip pressure allows golfers to swing freely and maintain control over their shots.

Overall, Josh’s grip adjustments were tailored specifically to his swing characteristics and tendencies. Kelan highlighted the fact that each golfer’s grip needs are unique and should be personalized for optimal performance. By strengthening his left hand grip and weakening his right hand grip, Josh was able to achieve a more consistent and powerful ball strike. The lesson serves as a reminder of the importance of proper grip technique in improving swing mechanics and overall golf performance.
