7 Confounding Habits of Seasoned Golfers That Baffle Me

7 Golf Habits That Leave Even Experienced Players Scratching Their Heads

Let’s face it: golf can be a perplexing game, no matter how long you’ve been at it. You’d think that after years on the course, players would have it all figured out, right? Well, not quite. Here are seven things seasoned golfers still do that just don’t make sense. Buckle up; you might just find yourself nodding along!

1. Aiming Somewhere, But Not at Anything

Have you ever noticed your fellow golfers standing on the tee box, looking all serious, but when you ask, “What are you aiming at?” they respond with something vague like, “I’m just trying to keep it in play”? C’mon! That’s not a target; that’s more like wishful thinking!

Golf is hard enough without muddling it further. If you’re not picking a specific target for your shots, what are you even doing out there? It’s time to quit the guessing game and choose a concrete aim. Your brain will thank you, and so will your scorecard. The next time you step up to hit, take a moment. Spot that target and focus on it. Your game will improve, and you might just surprise yourself with how much better your shots turn out!

2. Refusing to Get a Putter Fitting Because “It’s Too Expensive”

Okay, let’s talk about the elephant in the room. Some golfers will drop $600 on the latest driver but turn their noses up at spending a fraction of that for a putter fitting. Your putter is the one club you use the most, and it’s the only one that directly influences whether the ball drops in the hole. Seriously, what gives?

You’ll see players trying different grips or techniques and even experimenting with gadgets like lead tape. But a proper fitting? “Nah, that’s not worth it.” Newsflash! Investing in a putter fitting could change your game for the better. If you haven’t done it yet, it’s like playing with one hand tied behind your back. Get that fitting and watch your putting improve!

3. Guessing Yardages and Club Distances

Raise your hand if you’ve ever said you hit a 7-iron “about 160 yards.” But do you really know if that’s actual carry distance or the total after a bounce? Trust me, that distinction can matter a lot.

If you’re guessing how far you hit your clubs, you’re setting yourself up for failure. The one time you smashed a perfect shot doesn’t mean you’ll do it again regularly. Get on a launch monitor, or better yet, grab a GPS tracking app. You might be surprised to find out what those numbers really look like. Knowing your actual distances will help you manage your game much better. So, please, do yourself a favor and stop guessing!

4. Going to the Range Without a Plan

You’ve seen them: the golfers at the range just whacking balls without any purpose. Fifty shots with the 7-iron, a few with the driver, and maybe some wedges thrown in for good measure. What’s the point of that?

There’s a saying in golf: “Practice doesn’t make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.” Without a plan, you’re just reinforcing poor habits. Instead, have a clear objective each time you hit the range. Whether it’s working on your short game or dialing in your driver, be intentional. You’ll get way more out of your practice, and you’ll be much more prepared for your next outing.

5. Refusing to Move Up a Set of Tees

This one is baffling. Why are some golfers so adamant about playing from the tips when they know they shouldn’t be there? It’s not like there’s a medal for it! Playing from the back tees just adds unnecessary length to an already challenging game.

Some players treat tees like a badge of honor, but let’s be real: you’re not less of a golfer for playing from the forward tees. If playing a shorter distance helps you enjoy your game, then do it! Get the ball in play and create scoring opportunities rather than struggling for pars while hitting hybrids into every par-4. Remember, golf is supposed to be fun!

6. Playing a Different Golf Ball Every Round

I get it; trying out new golf balls can be exciting. But playing a different one every round? That’s another story. You can’t expect to establish consistency in your game while using random golf balls each time you tee it up.

There are real differences in how golf balls perform, from spin to feel to launch conditions. If you keep changing balls, you’re just complicating your game. Pick a ball that suits your style and stick with it. Consistency is key, especially if you’re looking to improve.

7. Leaving Headcovers Off Mid-Round

Here’s another head-scratcher: why do some golfers ditch their headcovers after the first tee? Clubs aren’t cheap, so tossing your headcovers aside and letting them rattle against each other is just asking for trouble.

Unless you’ve got a super cushy bag that protects them, your clubs are taking a beating throughout the round. If you’re investing in quality gear, take care of it! Replacing clubs can be costly; a simple headcover can shield your investments from unnecessary wear and tear. A little TLC goes a long way!

Final Thoughts

Most of these habits don’t rely on talent or deep pockets; they just require common sense and a bit of focus. If you’ve been in the game for years, take a moment to reflect. Are you still doing any of these things? It could be time for a change!

Golf is all about improving and enjoying the process, so let’s make smarter decisions on and off the course. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, there’s always room for improvement. So why not start today?

Embrace these insights, tweak your habits, and watch your game flourish! Happy swinging!
