7 Timeless Golf Traditions I Refuse to Abandon

As a long-time sports reporter specializing in professional golf, I’ve witnessed the evolution of the game, yet I find solace in its traditional aspects. While modern discourse encourages enjoyment and flexibility in playing styles, I remain committed to several time-honored practices that add depth and meaning to the game.

1. Playing With My Golf Shirt Tucked In

One of the first traditions I embrace is the simple act of tucking in my golf shirt. For me, it’s not just about aesthetics; it enhances comfort and promotes a sense of order. A tucked shirt eliminates excess movement during swings, allowing for a more focused experience. While many players opt for casual attire, I find that dressing up displays respect for the course and the game itself.

2. Avoiding Music During My Round

In a world filled with constant noise, I cherish the tranquility of the golf course. While I appreciate the presence of music as a backdrop in other settings, I prefer to enjoy the sounds of nature—birds chirping and the rustle of the wind. Golf is my escape, and I believe that each round should offer an opportunity for quiet reflection and connection with the environment.

3. Turning My Phone Off While Playing

Although golf apps can enhance the experience, I choose to disconnect from technology, allowing myself to enjoy the game in its purest form. I prefer engaging in conversations with my playing partners or simply relishing the moment between swings. A few hours without the constant buzz of notifications help me appreciate the game more deeply.

4. Putting With the Pin Out

Though I understand that many players keep the flagstick in while putting, I enjoy the traditional method of removing it. For me, putting with the pin out feels more authentic and less casual. This practice allows for a more focused approach to my game, ensuring I’m fully engaged in the moment.

5. Shaking Hands at the End of a Round

Ending each round with a handshake is a tradition that resonates with me. This gesture signifies respect for my playing partners and acknowledges the shared experience we just had. It’s a simple yet meaningful way to express gratitude and camaraderie after a day on the course.

6. Following Proper Order of Play

While the concept of "ready golf" has gained popularity, I still appreciate the conventional order of play. Allowing the player farthest from the hole to hit fosters a rhythm that enhances the game’s structure. Additionally, using previous hole scores to determine tee order encourages a sense of sportmanship.

7. Adhering to Basic Golf Etiquette

Golf etiquette may seem like common sense, but it’s crucial for maintaining respect on the course. Actions such as remaining quiet while others hit, avoiding shadows over their putt, and taking care of the course demonstrate civility and respect for fellow golfers. These traditions, rooted in honoring others, are what elevate golf from a mere sport to an experience.

While the game of golf continues to evolve, these seven traditions remain deeply important to me. They embody the essence of why I enjoy the sport and what it represents. What traditions do you hold dear on the golf course? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
