Lexi Thompson, the 28-year-old professional golfer, has been at the center of controversy following her post-round press conference after the Solheim Cup. The exchange with a reporter regarding an untimely shank went viral, sparking discussions among golf pundits and fans. LPGA Hall of Famer Nancy Lopez came to Thompson’s defense, saying she has been unfairly criticized and is tired of negative comments. In this article, we will explore five instances where Lexi Thompson has faced scrutiny that seems disproportionate compared to her peers.

In 2022, at the KPMG PGA Championship, Thompson had a two-stroke lead with three holes to play but ultimately lost the tournament. Following the loss, she was fined $2k for slow play, along with the rest of the group. Thompson declined to speak to the media after the round, a move that led to criticism on social media. It is worth noting that many golfers have skipped media sessions after disappointing performances without facing the same backlash. Comparatively, when Tiger Woods skipped post-round media briefings in 2019, there was minimal backlash.

Another instance of scrutiny against Thompson occurred at the 2021 U.S. Women’s Open. She missed a 6-foot eagle putt on the opening hole of the final round but still led by five strokes. However, she went on to lose the tournament. Golf analyst Brandel Chamblee criticized Thompson’s putting stroke, highlighting a perceived error. While Chamblee’s comments were honest, they also seemed more critical than what other LPGA golfers typically face in similar situations.

During the 2023 Solheim Cup, Thompson responded with “I don’t need to comment on that” when asked about a failed shot, sparking controversy within the golf community. Jessica Korda defended Thompson, stating that the golf media unfairly targeted her. However, it could be argued that the media coverage was a response to the reaction from golf fans to the viral clip. Thompson went on to win her next two matches, earning 3 points for the U.S. team, but this achievement was overshadowed by the previous incident.

Thompson has also faced negative comments and aggression on her Instagram posts, particularly relating to her putting. Despite sharing numerous videos of her putting practice, she receives critical remarks accusing her of neglecting that aspect of her game. This dynamic is unique to Thompson and is not commonly observed on other golfers’ social media accounts. Additionally, Thompson’s controversial rules decision at the 2017 ANA Inspiration, which led to the creation of the “Lexi rule,” has contributed to the perception that she has been treated unfairly at times.

In conclusion, Lexi Thompson has been the subject of disproportionate scrutiny in various instances throughout her career. From fines for slow play to critical comments on her putting stroke, Thompson has faced challenges and criticisms that may not have been leveled towards her peers in similar situations. Despite these obstacles, Thompson continues to excel on the golf course and contribute positively to the sport. It is essential for fans, pundits, and the media to consider these factors when evaluating Thompson’s performance and behavior on and off the course. Let us celebrate Thompson’s achievements and resilience as a professional golfer.
