Review of the Callaway XR Driver by Plugged In Golf

The Callaway XR driver is a forgiving and lightweight driver designed to deliver ball speed and promote a draw. While the Big Bertha drivers are the flagship models of Callaway, the X series has always been known for providing forgiveness and distance at a mid-level price. The focus of this year’s Callaway XR driver is on speed, with a promise of up to 5 MPH more ball speed compared to a 2012 Callaway driver. In this article, we will explore the features, performance, and overall verdict of the Callaway XR driver.

In terms of looks, the XR driver has an average-sized footprint for a 460 cc driver and features a rounded shape with a matte black “Speed Step Crown” that includes a chevron alignment aid. While the driver sets up square in the neutral position, there is an imbalance in the lines that make up the Speed Step Crown, which may be off-putting to some golfers. However, the chevron does align with the actual sweet spot, making it suitable for players who prefer this heel-side center of gravity.

The sound produced by the Callaway XR driver is a clean, medium volume pop that enhances the hot feel without being too loud or metallic. The driver comes fitted with a lightweight version of the Project X LZ shaft, weighing between 53 and 56 grams depending on the flex chosen. While the light weight shaft may contribute to the high speed performance, some players may find it too light to control effectively.

The performance of the Callaway XR driver is driven by various features, including an aerodynamic head shape, Speed Step Crown, faster R-MOTO face, longer shaft, and lightweight shaft. While these components benefit all golfers to some extent, some players may struggle with controlling the lighter, longer shaft. Callaway offers premium shaft options at no additional charge to cater to players who prefer a heavier shaft. The slightly heel-weighted sweet spot of the XR driver makes it suitable for players who hit the ball off the heel and struggle with a slice, facilitating a right-to-left ball flight.

In conclusion, the Callaway XR driver is a solid option for players looking to increase ball speed with a lighter club and a more responsive shaft. It is effective in promoting a draw ball flight and offers enough adjustability to suit a wide range of players. Compared to last year’s X2 Hot driver, the XR driver presents a different set of features and performance characteristics. Overall, the Callaway XR driver is a reliable choice for golfers seeking forgiveness, distance, and speed in their tee shots.
