Preview of the 124th US Open

The US Open is returning to the prestigious Pinehurst No.2 Course in North Carolina, known as the Cradle of American Golf, for the fourth time in history from June 13-16. This marks the beginning of a new era for Pinehurst, as the USGA has decided to host five future US Opens at the venue over the next 23 years, giving the course plenty of exposure and presenting a challenge to golfers from around the world. The No.2 Course, originally designed by Donald Ross, underwent major renovations in 2012, which will add unpredictability and difficulty for players at this year’s championship.

One of the defining features of the US Open is its reputation as the toughest test in golf, with long courses, narrow fairways, and heavy rough. However, the challenge at Pinehurst will be different due to the unique layout of the No.2 Course, which includes unmanaged areas with wiregrass and sandy terrain instead of maintained rough. Players will need to navigate these areas carefully, as the ball could end up in either easy or challenging positions. With bunkers interspersed among these sandy areas, each group of players will be accompanied by a rules official to determine the status of the ball.

The course conditions at Pinehurst will be fast and firm, with Bermuda grass greens instead of Bent grass greens. The fairways have been widened, but some areas have been narrowed to increase the difficulty, requiring players to show patience and accuracy in their shots. The USGA’s goal is to test every aspect of a player’s game, from shot-making skills to mental fortitude. The greens will be rolling fast, and the course will play at 7,540 yards from the back tees with a par of 70, making it a challenging test for even the best golfers in the world.

In contrast to the recent PGA Championship, where low scores were common due to generous fairways and softened greens, the US Open at Pinehurst will reward precision and creativity. The bombers and long hitters will not have the same advantage, as distance alone will not be enough to conquer the course. Straight hitters who can control their spin and ball flight will have an advantage, especially on the demanding greens that require precise shot placement. Golf fans can expect a thrilling competition with tight leaderboard standings and unpredictable outcomes.

In terms of favorites for the US Open at Pinehurst, world no.1 Scottie Scheffler, known for his wedge distance control, is a top contender at 4/1 odds. Masters champion Rory McIlroy (10-1) and PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele (12/1) are also strong contenders, with the latter demonstrating both form and patience to thrive under tough conditions. Other notable players include Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, Bryson DeChambeau, and Brooks Koepka, all of whom have the skills and experience to compete at the highest level.

For fans looking to place bets on the US Open, various sportsbooks offer odds for the tournament, with a range of options for different players. From established champions to rising stars, the field is full of talented golfers vying for the chance to hoist the US Open trophy at Pinehurst. With live coverage provided by Sky Sports, viewers around the world can tune in to watch the excitement unfold as the best golfers in the world compete at one of the most challenging and historic courses in the United States.
