The American Family Insurance Championship saw Boo Weekley taking the lead after the first round, shooting a 4-under 68. This marked Weekley’s 19th start on the Champions tour as he seeks his first victory. He made three birdies in a row on the front nine and closed with a birdie to tie Glen Day for the lead at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wisconsin. Weekley revealed in an interview at Wakonda Club in Des Moines that he drove a U-Haul to Iowa for the event after being unable to secure a rental car following the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship.

Steve Stricker, the Madison native and defending champion, is tied for third place with Jerry Kelly at 3 under. The challenging windy conditions and fast greens made scoring difficult for the players, with Stricker expressing that he felt he could have gone even lower if not for some missed putts. The tournament saw a six-way tie for third place, with other notable players like David Duval, Lee Janzen, Duffy Waldorf, and Thomas Bjorn in the mix. Stricker, who is also the host of the championship, emphasized the importance of managing the greens and adapting to the challenging conditions to navigate the course successfully.

Jim Owczarski of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel contributed to the coverage of the event, providing insights and updates on the players’ performances. Weekley’s decision to drive a U-Haul to Iowa added a humorous anecdote to the tournament, showcasing his laid-back attitude and unique personality. Despite his unconventional mode of transportation, Weekley’s focus on the course was evident as he put himself in contention for his first Champions tour victory. The competitive field and tough playing conditions set the stage for an exciting weekend of golf at the American Family Insurance Championship.

As the tournament progresses, fans can expect to see fierce competition and impressive shotmaking from top players like Weekley, Stricker, and Kelly. The leaderboard is tightly packed with talented golfers vying for the title, promising an exciting finish to the championship. With the support of enthusiastic spectators and the dedication of the players, the American Family Insurance Championship continues to showcase the best of professional golf on the Champions tour. Stay tuned for more updates and highlights from this prestigious event as the players battle it out for victory on the challenging course in Madison, Wisconsin.
