Surprising Changes to Gear by Major Champions Before U.S. Open

Matt Fitzpatrick and Sergio Garcia, both known for taking their time when it comes to changing equipment, have made interesting new club choices on the eve of the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. Matt, known for his meticulous approach to the game, has recently switched from his Ping Blueprint S irons to a fresh set of Titleist T100 short irons to add spin and control to his iron game. The Titleist T100 irons offer enhanced feel, refined control, effortless turf interaction, and better tungsten for improved flight.

While Matt still uses Ping i230s for his longer irons, his mid and short irons have been swapped out for the Titleist T100s. The T100s have a degree more loft compared to the Pings, which should help produce the extra spin Matt is seeking. The thin soles of the T100s may also be beneficial for navigating the firm sandy turf at Pinehurst No. 2. Meanwhile, Sergio Garcia, known for frequently changing putters throughout his career, has been seen using a Never Compromise Reserve Model 4 putter this week at the U.S. Open.

The Never Compromise Reserve putters, which were relaunched in the spring after years off the shelf, offer a new path towards more repeatable and fundamentally sound putting strokes. Garcia has fitted his putter with a BGT Stability graphite putter shaft for added performance. The Never Compromise Reserve putters come in both a tour satin finish and contrast look, providing extra alignment and nostalgia for golfers who remember the original putters from the 90s and early 2000s.

The big question for both players is how these equipment changes will impact their game once the U.S. Open begins. Fans and analysts are eager to see if the switch to the Titleist T100 irons will improve Matt Fitzpatrick’s game and if Sergio Garcia’s choice of the Never Compromise Reserve putter will lead to better putting performance. Stay tuned to see how these changes unfold during the tournament. For more on the latest gear news and information, check out the Fully Equipped podcast.
