In the 129th Amateur Championship held at Ballyliffin in Ireland, Scotland’s Connor Graham emerged as the leading qualifier after a solid performance. The 17-year-old from Blairgowrie showcased his skills with an opening round of 65 on the Old Course followed by a one-under-par 71 on the Glashedy Links. With a total score of seven-under-par, he finished three strokes ahead of Norway’s Michael Alexander Mjaaseth. South Africa’s Ben van Wyk also impressed with a third-place finish after shooting a 67 on the Glashedy Links.

Graham, a former winner of The R&A Junior Open, is looking to continue his strong performance in the match play phase of the tournament. He aims to become only the fourth player to win the qualifying round and go on to capture the title, following in the footsteps of Philip Parkin, Warren Bladon, and Matteo Manassero. Despite challenging conditions on the course, Graham remained composed and secured his spot at the top of the leaderboard with key birdies on the back nine.

Mjaaseth briefly took the lead during his second round but faltered with a bogey and double-bogey before finishing with a 72 to qualify for the match play stage. Van Wyk’s day started with a bogey but he quickly turned it around with an eagle and additional birdies to secure his spot in style. English teenager Oscar Lent also had a strong finish with birdies and a long eagle putt to secure his place in the match play stage.

The qualifying mark for the top 64 players and ties was set at three-over-par, leading to a sudden death playoff for 18 places. Notable players who advanced to the match play stage include Richard Teder of Estonia, Walker Cup player Jack Bigham, and St Andrews Link Trophy champion Sebastian Cave. However, some prominent names missed out, including South Africa’s Christiaan Maas, former Walker Cup players Matthew McClean and Liam Nolan, and R&A Boys’ Amateur champion Kris Kim.

The overall competition saw a mix of experienced players and emerging talents showcasing their skills on the challenging course at Ballyliffin. With the excitement and drama unfolding on the course, fans can stay updated on the scores and highlights through The R&A’s official channels. As the tournament progresses into the match play stage, all eyes will be on Connor Graham and the other top qualifiers as they battle for the coveted title of Amateur Championship winner.
