Travelers Championship thrown into chaos

The Travelers Championship faced chaos when a group of environmental activists disrupted play during the final round. The activists, representing the climate activism group Extinction Rebellion, stormed the 18th green at TPC River Highlands, throwing colored powder or paint on the putting surface. This unexpected incident led to the suspension of play as authorities apprehended the protestors. The players, Scottie Scheffler, Tom Kim, and Akshay Bhatia, were left shocked and bewildered by the disruption.

The disruption occurred as Scheffler was preparing to putt for birdie on the 18th hole to potentially secure the tournament win. The protestors, wearing shirts that read “No golf on a dead planet,” caused chaos on the green, leading to a tense situation for the players and spectators. Despite the disruption, the green was not damaged, aside from some paint and powder left by the protestors.

After the protest was cleared and order was restored, the players were able to resume play. Bhatia, who had been affected by the disruption, was given relief from the abnormal course condition caused by the paint and powder on the green. The tournament continued with Scheffler ultimately winning the playoff against Kim to secure his sixth victory of the season.

The incident at the Travelers Championship was part of a string of protests organized by Extinction Rebellion, who had also disrupted the KLM Open in the Netherlands earlier that day. The protestors’ actions raised questions about security measures at golf events and the impact of such disruptions on players and spectators.

Despite the chaotic ending, Scheffler emerged as the victor of the Travelers Championship, adding another win to his PGA Tour career. The tournament concluded with mixed emotions, as players and officials reflected on the disruption caused by the protestors. Moving forward, organizers and security personnel may need to reassess safety protocols to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
