Willie Mack III, a Flint native, secured his spot in the upcoming Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club by winning the John Shippen Invitational, a qualifying tournament featuring the top Black professional and amateur golfers in the nation. Despite not having a sponsor exemption, Mack’s victory earned him a spot in the prestigious event. Mack shot a 63 on Saturday and followed it up with a 74 on Sunday to claim a 7-under victory. He finished two shots ahead of Nyasha Mauchaza, with Kevin Hall and Cameron Riley tying for third at 2 under.

Mack, 35, dominated the first round of the tournament by firing a 9 under, resulting in a five-shot lead going into Sunday. Despite a tough front nine on the final day, where he dropped to 6 under due to blustery winds and four bogeys, Mack rallied on the back nine, shooting a 34 and securing a four-shot cushion heading into the final stretch. The wind proved challenging for all participants, with Mauchaza noting the difficulty in adjusting approaches on each hole.

The final hole saw Mack’s lead narrowing to just one shot after a bogey on the par-3 15th, but he sealed the victory with an uphill birdie putt over 10 feet. Mack expressed his excitement about playing in his hometown and in Michigan, emphasizing his enthusiasm for returning to the PGA Tour event after narrowly missing the cut at the U.S. Open earlier in the season. This will mark Mack’s second appearance in the Rocket Mortgage Classic and his ninth overall on the PGA Tour.

The Rocket Mortgage Classic will provide Mack with an opportunity to showcase his talent once again, following his previous success in making the first cut of his career at the event in 2021. Mack’s victory at the John Shippen Invitational not only earned him a spot in the upcoming tournament but also a significant cash prize of $13,200, reflecting his skill and determination on the course. Despite the challenges faced during the qualifying tournament, Mack’s resilience and focus were key to securing his berth in the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Mack’s performance at the John Shippen Invitational exemplifies his competitive spirit and ability to overcome obstacles to achieve his goals. His dedication to the sport of golf and drive to succeed have propelled him to success on the PGA Tour and in qualifying tournaments alike. As he prepares to tee off at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, Mack will carry the momentum from his recent victory and look to make a lasting impact in front of his hometown crowd. With his sights set on another strong showing, Mack is poised to make a statement at the upcoming event and further solidify his presence in the world of professional golf.
