Bethpage enforces strict measures to safeguard its tee sheets from misuse by bad actors and bots

The demand for tee times at the famous New York municipal facility, Bethpage State Park, remains strong, but complaints about the booking system have been increasing. In response to misuse of their tee-time reservation system, Bethpage management has implemented policy changes to crack down on bad actors such as bots and third-party booking services. These changes include cancellation restrictions, tee-time frequency limits, and the elimination of dubious accounts. A new booking category has been created to ensure that only verified New York State residents have access to the park’s courses.

The email sent to registered golfers warned against using bots or third-party booking services and stated that any golfer caught trying to resell or barter tee times would have their account suspended indefinitely. Bethpage has been experiencing robust demand for tee times since the Covid-19 pandemic spike, leading to complaints from golfers who are unable to secure reservations due to quick bookings each night at 7 p.m. One reason for the rapid bookings is the unfair advantage gained by some golfers through multiple accounts or coordination with others to reserve tee times.

To address these issues, Bethpage management has vetted every account in their reservation system and deleted hundreds of duplicate accounts. A new residency verification process has been implemented, requiring users to submit a copy of their New York driver’s license or official New York State I.D. Additionally, a new cancellation policy allows golfers to modify a reservation up to eight times in a calendar month, with additional tweaks resulting in account suspension. Reservation restrictions have also been put in place, such as capping reservations on the Red Course at one booking every 14 days.

The use of bots and third-party brokers in the municipal golf system has become a prevalent issue beyond New York, with Los Angeles recently imposing a $10 booking fee to deter tee time resale. While the extent of bots in the Bethpage system is unclear, measures have been taken to detect abnormal activity, and third-party brokers have been shut down with assistance from the New York State Park Police. The park management remains hopeful that the implemented changes will allow more users to obtain reservations moving forward and improve the overall booking experience for golfers at Bethpage State Park.
