Having control over the clubface is crucial for hitting solid shots with your irons. If you find that your irons are going left, right, or straight inconsistently, it is likely due to a lack of clubface control, often caused by early extension in your swing. Early extension refers to rising up as you swing into impact, while consistent iron strikers tend to stay down and rotate within their posture established at address for most of the downswing. Learning to maintain your posture and control the clubface is a critical skill to develop in your golf game.

One helpful tip to improve your clubface control is to use your cell phone as a training aid. By placing your phone in your front left pocket and making a backswing, you can work on pushing the phone deeper into your pocket as you start your downswing. If you extend early or lift up, the phone will stay put, but by focusing on maintaining your forward bend towards the ball and squatting a little as you start down, you can push the phone deeper into your pocket, helping you stay in the correct position for impact.

By incorporating the phone-in-pocket drill into your practice routine, you can work on dialing in your swing and improving your clubface control. This drill helps you visualize the correct position and movement during the downswing, allowing you to maintain your bend towards the ground and rotate freely through impact. While the phone may not actually dig deeper into your pocket, the imagery of it happening can be a powerful tool to help you make the necessary adjustments in your swing.

Martin Chuck, a GOLF Top 100 Teacher, operates the Tour Striker Golf Academy at Raven GC in Phoenix, Arizona. With his expertise and experience working with golfers of all skill levels, Chuck provides valuable insights and tips for improving your game. By focusing on maintaining your posture, controlling the clubface, and incorporating drills like the phone-in-pocket exercise, you can make significant strides in your swing mechanics and overall ball-striking ability.

Chuck emphasizes the importance of proper technique and fundamentals in achieving consistency and success in golf. By staying down and rotating within your posture, you can improve your ball-striking and optimize your clubface control. The phone-in-pocket drill serves as a practical and effective tool for reinforcing these key concepts and helping you make the necessary adjustments to your swing.

Incorporating drills and training aids into your practice routine can help you develop a better understanding of your swing and make improvements that lead to more consistent and solid ball-striking. By focusing on maintaining your posture, controlling the clubface, and utilizing tools like the phone-in-pocket drill, you can refine your technique and elevate your performance on the course. With guidance from instructors like Martin Chuck and the resources available at the Tour Striker Golf Academy, you can work towards reaching your full potential as a golfer.
