From Ski Accident to U.S. Adaptive Open Victory: A Golfer’s Inspiring Journey

Max Togisala’s inspiring journey, documented on Instagram, showcases his progression over the years following a ski accident that left him paralyzed and unable to use his legs. From swinging with one arm from a wheelchair to standing with adaptive golf equipment to eventually making a beautiful turn with the stunning Utah mountains in the background, Togisala’s dedication to the game has been a key part of his recovery process.

During his hospital stay and early days back home, Togisala’s parents provided him with golf clubs so he could practice chipping and putting. Shortly after, he was already hitting balls from a simulator spot and eventually transitioned to playing golf nearly every day. Despite the challenges of accepting that he would not be the same player he once was, Togisala’s love for the game kept him motivated on his journey.

Having played golf since he was three years old, Togisala had no idea that he would go on to achieve remarkable success in the sport. Competing in the USGA’s U.S. Adaptive Open became a focal point for him, and in his first appearance, he went on to win the Seated group with an impressive score that shattered previous records in his division.

Togisala’s victory in the U.S. Adaptive Open marked a turning point in his mindset, showcasing to himself and others that he could compete at a high level despite his physical challenges. The experience helped reignite his competitive spirit and drive, showing him that he could overcome obstacles and excel in a sport he loves.

Since his Adaptive Open win, Togisala has become an advocate for seated golf, participating in various adaptive events across the country and serving as Utah’s USGA P.J. Boatwright intern. His goal is to raise awareness about adaptive golf and inspire others facing similar challenges to pursue their passions and dreams.

Currently attending college at Weber State, Togisala has returned to playing other sports like pickleball and ping pong, utilizing special equipment to engage in physical activities. He has also found joy in skiing with a specially designed “bucket,” allowing him to navigate the slopes independently and experience a sense of freedom away from his wheelchair.

Max Togisala’s resilience and determination are evident in his return to Sun Valley, exactly one year after his life-altering accident. With support from his fiancée and family, he conquered the slopes and overcame his fears, proving to himself that he could face challenges head-on and emerge victorious. Togisala’s story serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for anyone facing adversity, showing that with perseverance and passion, anything is possible.
