Review of the Mizuno JPX923 Fli-Hi Hybrid

Mizuno is known for its high-quality irons in the golf industry. However, they have expanded their line to include iron-replacement hybrids, such as the Mizuno JPX923 Fli-Hi hybrid. This fall, alongside the JPX923 Hot Metal irons, Mizuno released the JPX923 Fli-Hi hybrid for golfers looking to improve their long approach shots.

The Mizuno JPX923 Fli-Hi hybrid features a clean, matte black crown with a larger footprint that gives it a slightly triangular appearance. The face is average in height, and the score lines are painted in a way that frames the ball, making it attractive at address. The club has a busy look in the bag with branding, logos, and Wave Technology near the leading edge.

Surprisingly, the impact sound of the Fli-Hi hybrid is average in volume, with a crisp, low-pitched, metallic “snap” on center strikes. The feel of pure strikes is zippy off the face, providing good feedback to the golfer. Mishits lose some of the crispness in sound and feel, but the club still feels forgiving and boosts confidence.

During performance testing on a launch monitor, the Mizuno Fli-Hi hybrid defied expectations with higher spin rates, making it a pure iron replacement rather than a distance monster. The spin produced consistent distances with soft landings, unlike modern hybrids built for pure distance. The club also provides medium-high, consistent launch angles to optimize carry distances and make the club more consistent for golfers.

In terms of ball speed and forgiveness, the Mizuno Fli-Hi hybrid performs as expected, with good ball speed on good strikes and consistency in ball speed across shots. The Wave Sole technology helps add speed to mishits, particularly those low on the face. Overall, the Fli-Hi hybrid is one of the best iron-replacement hybrids tested, offering forgiveness and predictable distance for long approach shots.

The Mizuno Fli-Hi hybrid may look large, but its size contributes to its forgiveness and consistent performance rather than wild, unpredictable distances. Golfers looking to swap out their long irons for something easier to hit should consider trying the Fli-Hi hybrid. With its predictable distance and forgiveness, it’s a club that golfers can confidently reach for on long approach shots.
