JoAnne Carner, the 85-year-old golf legend known as Big Mama, continues to amaze fans with her performances on the course. Despite shooting a 14-over 85 during the first round of the U.S. Senior Women’s Open, she managed to shoot her age or better for the seventh time in the last six years. Playing at the Fox Chapel Golf Club in Pittsburgh, Carner started off three over par after the first eight holes, including a birdie on the seventh hole. She ultimately turned in a four-over 40 after the front nine.

The back nine proved to be more challenging for Carner, as she struggled with two pars, four bogeys, and three double bogeys. However, she managed to close out the round with bogeys on the final two holes to finish at 85. Despite her disappointment with her performance, Carner managed to outplay six other players in the field. The leaderboard was topped by Japan’s Kaori Yamamoto, who shot a four-under 67, leading Christa Johnson and Lisa Grimes by a shot, with Annika Sorenstam posting a 71.

Reflecting on her round, Carner expressed frustration with her putting and swing, acknowledging the challenges of playing on an unfamiliar course. Despite the tough day, Carner’s impressive career includes two major championship victories at the U.S. Women’s Open in 1971 and 1976, as well as eight USGA championships and her induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1982. Throughout the years, Carner has continued to defy expectations, breaking records for the oldest person to play in a USGA championship and consistently competing in the U.S. Senior Women’s Open.

Despite teasing retirement each year, Carner continues to return to the course, sharing her love of the game with fans and fellow competitors. When asked about her future in the tournament, Carner hinted that this year might be her last. However, she quickly shifted the conversation to enjoying the evening, mentioning relaxing, taking a shower, and having a cocktail. With her enduring passion for golf and impressive resilience, Carner embodies the spirit of a true champion, inspiring generations of players with her remarkable performances and unwavering dedication to the sport.
