The 2024 U.S. Senior Women’s Open saw Kaori Yamamoto take the lead for the second consecutive day with a 4-under 67, breaking the 36-hole tournament record. However, LPGA legends Juli Inkster and Annika Sorenstam are right behind her at 2 under, with Inkster posting a 3-under 68 in the second round. Sorenstam, the 2021 USSWO champion with 72 LPGA wins, poses a threat to Yamamoto’s lead.

Yamamoto, a 50-year-old golfer from Japan, earned her spot in the tournament after winning a qualifier by six shots. Previously a caddie for her friend Eika Otake at the USSWO, Yamamoto finds herself in a surprising position leading the tournament. Reflecting on her performance, Yamamoto expressed both excitement and caution about competing against players like Sorenstam and Inkster.

As play was halted for darkness, Lisa Grimes found herself in solo second at 5 under, followed by Stefania Croce and Mikino Kubo at 4 under. Sorenstam and Inkster are tied for fifth with Christa Johnson. Notably, JoAnne Carner, 85, shot her age on the first day and followed it with an 80 in the second round. Despite her impressive feat, Carner’s two-day total of 23 over left her far from the projected cutline.

Yamamoto’s strategy and performance have been key factors in her success at the USSWO. This tournament marks her first appearance in a U.S. competition, making her rise to the top even more remarkable. With experienced competitors like Sorenstam and Inkster close behind, Yamamoto must maintain her focus and continue playing at a high level to secure victory.

The competition at the U.S. Senior Women’s Open remains fierce, with prominent golfers like Sorenstam and Inkster in striking distance of the lead. As the tournament unfolds, spectators can expect intense battles on the course as players vie for the prestigious title. With each round bringing new twists and challenges, the final outcome of the championship is still uncertain, adding to the excitement for both players and fans.

In the coming days, the leaderboard at the USSWO is likely to see further shifts and surprises as players jostle for position. With the talent and experience of golfers like Sorenstam, Inkster, and Yamamoto on display, the competition is sure to heat up as the tournament progresses. Whether a veteran champion or a rising star emerges victorious, the 2024 U.S. Senior Women’s Open promises to deliver thrilling moments and unforgettable performances on the green.
