How Scottie Scheffler will secure $8 million without competing this week

The Wyndham Championship this week may have a rain-soaked and delayed regular-season finale, but one player who has already emerged as a winner is Scottie Scheffler. Fresh off his gold-medal victory in Paris, Scheffler’s impressive season includes six official PGA Tour wins, including his second Masters title and becoming the first player to defend the Players Championship. With victories in signature series events like the Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, Memorial, and Travelers Championship, Scheffler has dominated the season-long standings with 5,993 points, nearly 2,000 points ahead of second-place Xander Schauffele and 3,500 points ahead of Rory McIlroy.

The Comcast Top 10 pole position is awarded to the top regular-season points getter on the PGA Tour, and Scheffler has secured this position along with an $8 million prize. This is not Scheffler’s first time winning this award, as he also claimed the honor in 2022 and finished second to Jon Rahm last season. With over $36 million in PGA Tour earnings this year, Scheffler still has the opportunity to add to this total with the upcoming FedEx Cup playoff events offering lucrative purses.

In addition to Scheffler, other players in the top 10 of the season’s standings include Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Ludvig Aberg, Sahith Theegala, Hideki Matsuyama, Sungjae Im, and Shane Lowry. While Im and Lowry are competing in this week’s Wyndham Championship, other players like Akshay Bhatia, Robert MacIntyre, Brian Harman, and Christiaan Bezuidenhout have the chance to crack the top 10 with a win. The significance of finishing in the top 10 extends beyond just prestige, as it can also lead to substantial financial rewards with the Player Impact Program offering another $10 million in potential earnings.

Scheffler’s dominance on the PGA Tour this season has not gone unnoticed, as he has already set the record for most earnings in a single season with $21 million last year. With the first two FedEx Cup playoff events each offering $20 million in purses and the Tour Championship boasting a $100 million purse, Scheffler has the opportunity to further solidify his status as one of the tour’s top earners. As the regular-season finale unfolds at the rain-soaked Wyndham Championship, the battle for positioning in the top 10 intensifies, with players looking to secure their positions and potentially earn significant financial rewards.
