Aaron Rai claims first PGA Tour title at Wyndham Championship after Max Greyserman’s late collapse

The Wyndham Championship ended with Aaron Rai capturing his first PGA Tour win, finishing at 18 under. However, the lasting memory from the event will likely be Max Greyserman’s nightmarish closing stretch. It all began with Greyserman hitting a magical 91-yard approach for an eagle on the 13th hole, pushing him to 21 under and seemingly securing his victory. But he then hit his tee shot out of bounds on 14, leading to a quadruple bogey 8 and giving his four-shot lead away in one hole.

Despite rebounding with a birdie on 15 to retake the lead, Greyserman’s fortunes turned sour again on 16 when he missed a short par putt and made double, losing his lead for good. Meanwhile, Rai maintained his composure and made five straight pars before sinking a six-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to clinch the victory. Greyserman reflected on his missed opportunities, citing a stroke of bad luck on the 13th hole that changed the tide of the tournament.

Rai, a 29-year-old English golfer, secured his first PGA Tour win and earned entry into the Masters next year with his victory at the Wyndham Championship. He expressed gratitude for the achievement and described the experience as a dream come true. Greyserman, also 29, acknowledged the disappointment of his defeat but focused on the positive aspects of his performance throughout the tournament, highlighting his strong play leading up to the final stretch.

The Wyndham Championship also saw Ryo Hisatsune and J.J. Spaun finishing in a tie for third at 15 under, while amateur Luke Clanton posted a solo fifth-place finish after a grueling day playing 39 holes. The tournament ended the Tour’s regular season, with the top 70 players remaining unchanged in the final standings. The only significant drama came between Victor Perez and Davis Riley, with Perez narrowly maintaining his position inside the bubble.

The PGA Tour now heads to Memphis for the first leg of the playoffs, where both Greyserman and Rai will be competing. As Greyserman reflects on a strong rookie season with unanswered questions, Rai looks to build on his recent success and continue his upward trajectory in his career. Despite the strange circumstances that surrounded the Wyndham Championship, including inclement weather and unexpected turns of events, both players demonstrated resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
