Matt Kuchar explains reasoning for marking his ball on 72nd hole – GolfWRX

Matt Kuchar faced backlash from fans and the media after deciding to come back on Monday to finish his round at the Wyndham Championship. His playing partners had already finished the hole, but Kuchar chose to mark his ball due to darkness and come back the next day. He explained that he wanted to set an example for Max Greyserman, who had struggled on hole 16, and give him a chance to finish the tournament strong.

Despite the criticism, Kuchar made a par on the 18th hole on Monday, earning himself a T12 finish and $120,000 in prize money. He apologized for the inconvenience caused to the tournament staff and media who had to return for the Monday finish but felt that a bogey would have been the best-case scenario if he had finished on Sunday. Unfortunately, Kuchar’s 17-year FedEx Cup playoff streak will come to an end this year, but he remains focused on finishing the season strong.

The decision to come back on Monday was seen as selfish by many fans and media members, with some calling Kuchar a “douchebag” for making others stay an extra night for just a few shots. Despite the backlash, Kuchar stood by his decision to give himself and Greyserman a fair chance to finish the tournament properly. He acknowledged that it may not have been the popular choice, but he felt it was the right thing to do in that moment.

Kuchar’s actions at the Wyndham Championship stirred up a debate about sportsmanship and fair play in golf. Some argued that Kuchar’s decision showed a lack of respect for the game and his fellow competitors, while others applauded his integrity and willingness to do what he felt was right. In the end, Kuchar’s performance on Monday spoke for itself, as he finished strong and earned a respectable finish in the tournament.

Moving forward, Kuchar will have to deal with the fallout from his controversial decision at the Wyndham Championship. He may face further criticism from fans and media members, but he remains focused on his game and finishing the season on a positive note. Whether or not his reputation has been tarnished by this incident remains to be seen, but Kuchar will continue to compete at the highest level and represent himself and the sport of golf with integrity and professionalism.
