The FedEx St. Jude Championship marks the beginning of the PGA Tour season’s FedEx Cup Playoff events, where the top 70 players in the season-long standings compete for the chance to reach the BMW Championships, with 20 players eliminated after the first event. This year, there is a $20m payout on offer, with $3.6m going to the winner. World No.1 Scottie Scheffler headlines the field, coming off a successful year with wins at The Masters and the men’s Olympics golf tournament.

Xander Schauffele is another player in top form, having claimed two Major titles, the PGA Championship and The Open, without missing a cut in the regular season. Rory McIlroy is also seeking his fourth FedEx Cup title and is looking for a strong start in this event, following a T5 finish at the Olympics and victories at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and Wells Fargo Championship earlier in the year. Five other members of the world’s top 10 are also competing, including Viktor Hovland, who won the FedEx Cup in 2023.

Other former FedEx Cup winners in the field include Justin Rose, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, and Billy Horschel. Will Zalatoris, the winner of the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship, and Aaron Rai, the winner of the Wyndham Championship, are also competing in this no-cut event. The field is stacked with talented golfers, each vying for the chance to advance in the Playoffs and potentially claim the coveted FedEx Cup trophy.

While the field for the FedEx St. Jude Championship is strong, there are notable names missing from the Playoffs this year. Lucas Glover, the winner of the 2023 event at TPC Southwind, failed to qualify, as did Rickie Fowler, who opted not to try and qualify due to the recent birth of his second daughter. Other big names who missed out on the Playoffs include Kurt Kitayama, Francesco Molinari, and Matt Kuchar, ending his 17-year streak in the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

The competition at the FedEx St. Jude Championship promises to be intense, with players like Scheffler, Schauffele, and McIlroy all aiming for success. The stakes are high, with a significant prize purse and the opportunity to advance to the BMW Championships and beyond. Fans can expect thrilling golf action as these top players battle it out on the course, each hoping to make their mark in the first stage of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Stay tuned for exciting updates and coverage of the tournament as the race for the FedEx Cup heats up.
