The origin of Memphis’ famous ‘Hush Y’all’ paddles: The truth is, they were borrowed

The FedEx St. Jude Championship returned this week at TPC Southwind, marking the start of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. One of the unique features that sets this event apart is the use of “Hush Y’all” paddles instead of the traditional “Quiet Please” signs commonly seen at golf tournaments. This signature spin on the tradition was introduced by Dwight Drinkard, the tournament’s first full-time tournament director when it was known as the Federal Express St. Jude Classic. Drinkard saw an opportunity to add some Southern flair to the event by replacing wooden paddles with lighter, more eye-catching alternatives.

Sadly, Drinkard passed away on Aug. 5, but his legacy lives on through the continued use of the “Hush Y’all” paddles at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. The idea was not entirely original, as Drinkard drew inspiration from the Atlanta Classic, which also used similar paddles with the phrase “Hush Mon!” The Southern charm of the “Hush Y’all” paddles quickly caught on and became a talking point throughout the PGA Tour. Even as other tournaments adopted similar concepts, the FedEx St. Jude Championship remained synonymous with this unique tradition.

The popularity of the “Hush Y’all” paddles has only grown over the years, with the merchandise now being sold at the event’s merchandise tent. In addition to the paddles, fans can purchase hats, T-shirts, and other swag featuring the beloved phrase. The paddles have become a hot-ticket item among spectators, with some even attempting to pilfer them as souvenirs. This speaks to the widespread appeal and popularity of the paddles, further solidifying their status as a symbol of the FedEx St. Jude Championship’s identity.

Jack Sammons, the FedEx St. Jude Championship’s general chairman, has been instrumental in maintaining and promoting the “Hush Y’all” paddles as a key feature of the event. When Sammons took over as general chairman in 2010, merchandise branding was updated to reflect the tournament’s transition to the FedEx St. Jude Classic. This included ensuring that the iconic paddles remained a central part of the tournament experience. The paddles are held up by marshals using golf shafts donated by TrueTemper, adding a unique touch to the event and making them a sought-after souvenir among fans.

Despite the passing of the original creator, Dwight Drinkard, the legacy of the “Hush Y’all” paddles lives on at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. The paddles have become a symbol of the event’s Southern charm and unique identity within the world of professional golf. As the tournament continues to evolve and grow in popularity, the “Hush Y’all” paddles serve as a reminder of the creativity and innovation that can elevate a sporting event to new heights.
