Australian golfer Cameron Smith, the 2022 Open champion, has announced his commitment to playing in the New South Wales Open Golf Championship in November. The prestigious event will be held at the Murray Downs Golf and Country Club, offering a total prize purse of $800,000 Australian Dollars. Known for its challenging layout and stunning scenery, Murray Downs is considered one of Australia’s top inland golf courses. Smith, a six-time PGA Tour and three-time LIV Golf champion, will headline the tournament alongside other top Australian golfers.

In a statement, Smith expressed his excitement about participating in the NSW Open for the first time, emphasizing his support for Australian golf. The 31-year-old, who has won the Australian PGA Championship three times, looks forward to competing in the tournament as part of a busy summer of Australian golf events. Golf fans can expect a fantastic atmosphere at Murray Downs, as Smith’s presence is sure to draw large crowds and elevate the level of competition at the event.

Graeme Phillipson, COO of Golf NSW, praised Smith’s decision to play in the NSW Open, noting that his star power will be a significant boost for the tournament. The event, which has a rich history dating back to 1931, has seen legendary golfers such as Ian Baker-Finch, Peter Thomson, and Greg Norman emerge as champions. Norman, the LIV Golf commissioner, has won the NSW Open four times in his career, underscoring the tournament’s prestige in Australian golf.

Smith, who has a strong following at home tournaments, has played in notable events such as the LIV Golf Adelaide series, the Australian Open, and the Australian PGA Championship. His appearance in the NSW Open is expected to attract even larger crowds, building on the success of previous tournaments. As Smith prepares for the upcoming LIV Golf events and looks to improve his individual and team standings, he remains a key figure in the Australian golf scene.

Having last won a trophy at the 2022 PGA Championship, Smith will aim to add to his accolades in Australia after a thrilling playoff victory with Ripper GC in a recent LIV Golf event. With the support of his loyal fans and fellow competitors, including defending Australian Open champion Joaquin Niemann, Smith is poised to make a strong impact in the upcoming tournaments. As the golf season heats up, all eyes will be on Smith and his fellow players as they compete for glory in the Australian golf circuit.
