PGA Tour to implement broadcast enhancements based on ‘fan input’

The PGA Tour is making changes to its broadcast schedule this fall in response to complaints from viewers. Commissioner Jay Monahan announced a new “pilot program” that will test new broadcast enhancements during Golf Channel’s Friday broadcasts from the Tour’s fall series. The program will rely on feedback from fans in real-time to offer new ideas for improving the quality of the broadcasts.

The goal of the pilot program is to innovate the broadcasts with fans more involved in the decision-making process. The Tour plans to show fans a traditional broadcast on Thursday and then adopt new features based on fan feedback on Friday. Fans will be surveyed to test their preferences, and the feedback will help the Tour further enhance the broadcasts.

The decision to implement this new program comes as questions surround the health of the Tour’s TV products. Ratings were down more than 15 percent for one of the Tour’s TV partners in 2024, leading to concerns about viewer interest in week-to-week golf. The new program aims to improve the viewing experience for fans and address some of the issues that have contributed to declining ratings.

The new broadcast enhancements will focus on allowing fans to see more shots and potentially fewer putts during broadcasts. The Tour will also continue to test other broadcast innovations as the program progresses. The feedback from fans and Golf Channel employees will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the Tour’s television broadcasts.

The Tour’s decision to formalize and hasten audience feedback efforts reflects a growing trend in the sports world to involve fans in production decisions. The Tour can afford to implement these changes during the fall season when audiences are smaller, making it an ideal time to test new ideas and innovations.

While the success of the pilot program remains to be seen, the Tour is optimistic that it will result in a better viewing experience for fans. By incorporating feedback from viewers and Golf Channel employees, the Tour hopes to address some of the challenges facing its TV products and attract a larger audience in the future.

Overall, the changes to the PGA Tour’s broadcast schedule represent a significant shift in how the Tour approaches its television broadcasts. By involving fans in the decision-making process and testing new innovations, the Tour aims to improve the quality of its broadcasts and enhance the viewing experience for viewers. Time will tell whether these changes lead to higher ratings and increased viewer interest in professional golf.
