The 43rd Curtis Cup saw Great Britain and Ireland dominating the fourballs to take a two-point lead going into the final day of the competition. Catriona Matthew’s team managed to build a 7-5 advantage over Team USA at Sunningdale’s Old Course, setting the stage for an exciting final day of eight singles ties. The GB&I team is aiming to win the Curtis Cup for the first time since 2016, with the USA having won 11 of the last 13 contests. The team needs to reach 10½ points to secure victory on Sunday.

After starting the day level at 3-3, the morning foursomes were halved before Team GB&I delivered a strong afternoon performance against Team USA to secure two-and-half points from three matches. England’s Lottie Woad, the number one amateur in the world, continued to shine on the course, teaming up with Ireland’s Sara Byrne to remain undefeated throughout the competition. This pairing became the first to achieve this feat since a format change in 2008.

The afternoon fourballs showcased the skill and teamwork of the GB&I team, with players like Hannah Darling and Mimi Rhodes setting the tone with an impressive victory. Darling and Rhodes combined effectively to secure a 3&2 win over their opponents, showcasing their talent and determination on the course. Other pairings, like Beth Coulter and Lorna McClymont, also contributed to the team’s success with a fine 2&1 victory.

In the morning foursomes, the competition was evenly matched, with both teams tied at 4½ points each halfway through day two. The top match saw Woad and Byrne fighting to salvage a crucial half-point against their American counterparts, showcasing the intense competition between the two teams. Despite some close matches, Team GB&I managed to level the scores once again before heading into the afternoon fourballs.

Team captain Catriona Matthew praised her team’s performance and resilience throughout the competition, highlighting the players’ determination and teamwork. Matthew emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and staying prepared for the challenges that lie ahead, acknowledging that the Americans would come out fighting on the final day of the competition. Players like Hannah Darling expressed their determination to secure victory for the team, drawing on their experience and camaraderie to propel them to success.

As the competition enters its final day, both teams are gearing up for an exciting conclusion to the 43rd Curtis Cup.
