Rory McIlroy and Cam Champ are among the PGA Tour’s longest drivers

The PGA Tour has been tracking average driving distance stats since 1980, with Hank Kuehne holding the record of 321.4 yards in 2003 for almost two decades until Bryson DeChambeau broke it during the 2019-20 season. DeChambeau then surpassed his own record the following year. Going back to 1997, John Daly was the first golfer to surpass the 300-yard mark and led the Tour in driving distance 11 times.

Interestingly, being a big hitter doesn’t necessarily lead to victory, as only eight golfers on the list of longest drivers were able to win a PGA Tour event in the same year they led in driving distance. Notably, neither Tiger Woods nor Phil Mickelson ever led the Tour in driving distance. The list includes notable names like Dan Pohl, Bill Calfee, John McComish, Bill Glasson, and Andy Bean, who all led the PGA Tour in driving distance during different years in the 1980s and 1990s.

Other prominent names on the list include Davis Love III, Steve Thomas, Ed Humenik, Tom Purtzer, Hank Kuehne, Scott Hend, Bubba Watson, Robert Garrigus, J.B. Holmes, Luke List, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, and Cameron Champ. The list spans several decades, with each player showcasing exceptional power off the tee and measuring their driving distance on two holes per round.

Notable achievements include Daly’s multiple victories during his reign as driving distance leader, Watson’s back-to-back wins and Masters titles, and DeChambeau’s record-breaking average yards per drive. McIlroy also made history by surpassing the 326-yard mark in 2023. The PGA Tour takes careful measurements on two holes per round to accurately track each player’s driving distance, regardless of whether the drive lands in the fairway or not.

Overall, the list of longest drivers on the PGA Tour showcases the powerful impact of driving distance in professional golf and the players who have excelled in this aspect of the game over the years. From historic records set by players like Daly and Kuehne to the modern-day dominance of DeChambeau and McIlroy, the evolution of driving distance on the Tour reflects the continuous pursuit of excellence in golf. As new generations of players emerge, the quest for longer, more precise drives remains a key factor in achieving success on the PGA Tour.
