In golf, punctuality is key, and showing up on time shows respect for others and the game. Most golf courses prefer players to check in at the pro shop at least 20 to 30 minutes before their tee time to ensure smooth operations. While some courses have strict policies regarding check-in times, others handle it on a case-by-case basis. It is especially important to arrive early at busy courses to prevent any delays in the tee sheet and keep the game moving smoothly.

However, once you have checked in and paid for your tee time, that time slot belongs to you. No one has the right to give it away before it expires, regardless of how early or late you arrive at the first tee. The expectation is that you will get going quickly and maintain a reasonable pace throughout the round. The Etiquetteist argues that even if you arrive a minute or two late at the first tee, you should still be allowed to keep your position without being bumped back.

In the case of Paul from Skokie, Ill., who arrived at the first tee just two minutes before his tee time, only to find the starter had already given his group’s spot to the group behind them, it raises questions about the starter’s actions. While punctuality is important, the treatment Paul received seemed excessive and unnecessary. The starter may have had his reasons for bumping back Paul’s group, such as wanting to maintain a fast pace of play or feeling frustrated with late arrivals, but ultimately, it was an unfair decision.

It is essential for golfers to be punctual at the pro shop to avoid any misunderstandings or delays. While some starters may be strict about check-in times, it is ultimately up to the course’s discretion. On the first tee, however, once you have checked in and paid, your tee time should not be given away to other groups. Even if you arrive slightly late, you should still be allowed to play without being bumped back.

Ultimately, showing up on time is a sign of respect for the game, the course, and your fellow players. While it is important to follow the guidelines set by the golf course regarding check-in times, it is also important for starters to be fair and reasonable in their decisions. Players should aim to arrive early to avoid any issues or delays and ensure a smooth and enjoyable round of golf for everyone involved.
