Former LIV professional exposes Jon Rahm’s tactic to return to DP World Tour

In a recent development in the world of professional golf, LIV Golf star Jon Rahm appealed the sanctions imposed on him by the DP World Tour for joining the upstart league. This move allowed him to enter DP World Tour events and maintain his membership for 2025, as well as his access to the European Ryder Cup team for next year. However, this decision has not been well-received by everyone, including former LIV pro Bernd Wiesberger, who believes Rahm found a loophole around substantial fines by appealing the sanctions.

Wiesberger, who was an early defector to LIV back in 2022, made the decision to rejoin the DP World Tour in 2024. This move required him to pay significant fines and agree to a lengthy suspension. Despite following all the rules and sanctions set out by the DP World Tour to regain membership, Wiesberger still does not have full privileges, such as the ability to play in certain events like the Barracuda Championship, where he was likely serving a separate suspension for playing on LIV in 2023.

In an interview with bunkered, Wiesberger expressed his displeasure with the way some players, including Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton, have seemingly found an easier way back into DP World Tour events without facing the consequences of their actions. Wiesberger explained that while he understands the importance of having the best players in tournaments, he does not agree with the idea of going around the rules or finding loopholes to avoid penalties.

Despite not mentioning it directly, Wiesberger’s frustration with the situation may also stem from his desire to be considered for the European Ryder Cup team. Having played on the team in the past, Wiesberger may feel that his chances for selection in the future are impacted by the privileges afforded to players who have appealed their sanctions. While Rahm is almost guaranteed a spot on the European team should he be eligible, Wiesberger’s chances may be more uncertain.

As the golf world continues to navigate the evolving landscape of professional tours and player memberships, the issue of fairness and equality remains a topic of discussion among players and fans alike. The decisions made by players like Rahm and the reactions from players like Wiesberger shed light on the complexities of professional golf and the impact of these decisions on individual careers and opportunities. It remains to be seen how this situation will be resolved and what implications it may have for future tournaments and Ryder Cup selections.
