Jon Rahm details how a minor gear adjustment changed his entire season

Jon Rahm’s recent victory at LIV Chicago highlighted his exceptional talent and skill as a golfer, especially when he’s in good health. After overcoming a foot infection that caused him to miss the U.S. Open, Rahm went on to win two out of the last three LIV events, with a runner-up finish in between, securing the individual title and a significant prize of $22 million. In a post-victory interview, Rahm credited his improved performance to a change he made to his driver shaft prior to the U.S. Open withdrawal. This change allowed him to swing more naturally and effectively, leading to better results on the course.

Rahm’s decision to switch driver shafts is noteworthy because shafts are often considered a secondary component in golf club builds compared to the clubhead. Throughout his career, Rahm had consistently used the Aldila Tour Green 75TX driver shaft until this year when he switched to a Fujikura Ventus Black 7X shaft for his Callaway driver. The new shaft worked better with his swing speed, improving his timing and shot dispersion. According to Callaway’s Tour content manager, the change was necessary for Rahm to eliminate a recurring left miss and improve his overall performance off the tee.

The Fujikura Ventus Black shaft is popular among Tour players for its benefits, including lower launch and spin rates, stability at impact, and reduced torque. These features are particularly advantageous for golfers with higher swing speeds like Rahm, helping to minimize mishits and improve consistency off the tee. While the head of the club remains essential in building a driver, Rahm’s success with his shaft change emphasizes the importance of being open to testing different options to improve performance on the course. This lesson can be applied to all golfers looking to enhance their game.

If you’re considering updating your golf equipment for the coming year, it may be worth exploring different shaft options to see if there is a better fit for your swing and game. Rahm’s experience serves as a reminder that small adjustments can have a significant impact on performance, and finding the right shaft to complement your swing characteristics can lead to better results on the course. By being open to change and willing to experiment with different equipment, you may discover improvements in your game that can help you play at your best level. Consider seeking out a fitting location near you to explore the options available and optimize your golf equipment for success in 2024.
