The Etiquetteist, a columnist who specializes in laying ground rules for on-course behavior, recently tested the capabilities of artificial intelligence in providing golf etiquette advice. Using ChatGPT, an A.I. chatbot, The Etiquetteist sought guidance on how to handle a situation where they caught their playing partner cheating on the golf course. The chatbot advised addressing the issue calmly and suggested offering to replace the broken equipment as a gesture of responsibility, despite the cheating incident sparking the confrontation.

The conversation between The Etiquetteist and ChatGPT also touched on the appropriate pace of play on the golf course. ChatGPT recommended that a group of four players should ideally take between 4 and 4.5 hours to complete 18 holes, with various factors such as course layout and player experience affecting the pace. Slow play was a common frustration for The Etiquetteist, who sought advice on encouraging a sluggish playing partner to pick up the pace while maintaining a positive atmosphere on the course.

The role of caddies in improving or hindering pace of play was also discussed, with The Etiquetteist noting that caddies can sometimes lead to lengthy discussions and slow down the game. ChatGPT acknowledged the dual nature of caddie involvement and provided guidelines for tipping caddies based on the level of service and course prestige. Despite the potential financial benefits of caddying, The Etiquetteist expressed satisfaction in pursuing a career in journalism, which offers unique rewards and opportunities for influencing public discourse.

Throughout the conversation, The Etiquetteist displayed a humorous and lighthearted approach to discussing the challenges and nuances of golf etiquette. Despite contemplating drastic measures to address cheating on the course, such as snapping equipment in frustration, The Etiquetteist ultimately recognized the importance of maintaining integrity and respect in the game. The conversation with ChatGPT showcased the potential of technology to provide guidance on complex social and ethical dilemmas in the context of golf.

In conclusion, The Etiquetteist’s interaction with ChatGPT highlighted the intersection of traditional values and modern technology in the realm of golf etiquette. While A.I. tools can offer valuable insights and advice on navigating etiquette challenges on the course, the human element of emotional intelligence and personal relationships remains integral to upholding the spirit of the game. By blending humor, wisdom, and practical tips, The Etiquetteist demonstrated the importance of balancing respect for tradition with openness to innovative solutions in fostering a welcoming and inclusive golf community.
