Role Models and the Influence They Have in Golf

Role models play a significant role in shaping the lives and careers of individuals in all aspects of life, including golf. In a recent interview at Royal Montreal, several professional golfers, including Scottie Scheffler, Tom Kim, Jason Day, Patrick Cantlay, Ben An, Sahith Theegala, and Collin Morikawa, were asked about their role models and the influence they have had on their careers. Their responses shed light on the importance of having role models in not only guiding one’s career but also in shaping their character and values.

Different golfers mentioned various role models, ranging from legendary golfers like Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player to athletes from other sports like Kobe Bryant and Roger Federer. For Jim Furyk and Mike Weir, Jack Nicklaus stood out as an idol, with both golfers citing his influence on their careers and character. They mentioned the impact of getting to know Nicklaus personally and how it influenced their approach to the game. Similarly, Jason Day spoke about his admiration for Roger Federer, highlighting his grace and sportsmanship as qualities that he looks up to as a role model in his career.

The role models mentioned by the golfers were not limited to sports figures, as some mentioned family members as their primary source of inspiration. Sahith Theegala, for example, spoke about his father and the values of kindness and positivity that he instilled in him. Collin Morikawa also mentioned his parents as essential role models, attributing his success in golf to the opportunities and support they provided him. These responses underscore the significance of family support and values in shaping a golfer’s career and character.

Interestingly, some golfers, like Ben An, mentioned not having specific role models but rather aspiring to be the best version of themselves. An spoke about focusing on personal growth and improvement rather than emulating others, highlighting the importance of self-awareness and authenticity in his approach to the game. This perspective challenges the notion of traditional role models and emphasizes the value of individuality and self-expression in golf.

In addition to reflecting on their role models, the golfers were asked about their sense of obligation to be role models themselves. Many expressed a desire to inspire and positively impact others, especially young fans and aspiring golfers. While some, like Tom Kim, felt a responsibility to set a positive example on and off the course, others, like Scottie Scheffler, emphasized the importance of being true to oneself and having fun in the process. These responses highlight the diverse ways in which professional golfers view their roles as influencers and mentors in the golf community.

Overall, the interviews with professional golfers at Royal Montreal provided valuable insights into the role models that have shaped their careers and the influence they have had on their personal and professional development. From legendary golfers to family members and personal values, these role models have played a crucial role in guiding their paths and shaping their identities as golfers. By sharing their stories and reflections, these golfers offer a glimpse into the power of mentorship, inspiration, and authenticity in the world of golf.
