Two Easy Ways to Hit a High, Soft Bunker Shot

When it comes to hitting a high, soft bunker shot, many golfers struggle with the technique required to get the ball out of deep greenside bunkers. However, with the right approach and some key tips, this shot doesn’t have to be as intimidating as it seems. GOLF Top 100 Teacher Trillium Rose offers some simple keys to help golfers navigate this challenging shot.

One of the most crucial aspects of hitting a high, soft bunker shot is having the right club in your hands. Rose recommends using a high-lofted club, such as a 58-degree wedge or a lob wedge, to help get the ball up quickly and softly out of the sand. It’s also important to make sure your grooves are clean and dry before attempting the shot to ensure optimal performance.

In addition to using the right club, Rose emphasizes the importance of generating sufficient speed to get through the sand effectively. To do this, she advises golfers to use their body to turn through the shot and keep their hands soft for a smooth swing. By digging in with your feet, especially on the front foot, and rotating your hips through the shot, you can generate the speed needed to escape the bunker with ease.

To control the trajectory and distance of the shot, Rose suggests using an abbreviated finish to prevent the ball from rolling too far past the target. By focusing on a long backswing and a short finish, you can ensure that the ball lands softly on the green without overshooting the hole. This technique helps golfers maintain control over their bunker shots and improve their chances of getting up and down from challenging lies.

By following Rose’s advice and incorporating these key tips into your bunker game, you can upgrade your skills and feel more confident when faced with deep greenside bunker shots. With practice and proper technique, hitting high, soft bunker shots can become a strength in your game rather than a source of frustration. So next time you find yourself in a deep bunker with a tall face, remember these simple keys and approach the shot with confidence.
