Putting is one of the most critical aspects of golf, and becoming a proficient putter requires mastering the art of adjusting your speed based on the distance of the putt. To excel in putting, you need to be able to handle short putts, mid-range putts, long-distance putts, and lag putts effectively. Unlike experienced golfers who can adjust their stroke speed based on the situation, newcomers often struggle with guessing the right speed for each putt.

Many amateur golfers mistakenly believe that they can adjust their stroke speed to control the distance of the putt. However, the speed of your stroke naturally changes depending on the length of your backstroke. For shorter putts, you need shorter backstrokes, and for longer putts, you require longer backstrokes. By understanding this fundamental principle, you can simplify your putting technique and improve your consistency on the greens.

To determine the appropriate length for your backstroke, try a simple exercise next time you are on the putting green. Stand next to the ball and walk towards the hole, counting the number of steps it takes to reach the cup. Each step should be approximately three feet, so for every step you take, increase your backstroke length by one inch. This method allows you to adapt your stroke length based on the distance of the putt, accounting for any variations in terrain or green speeds.

As you swing your putter, focus on completing your backstroke before smoothly transitioning to the forward motion. Resist the temptation to add speed to your stroke, as this can lead to inconsistent results. Great putters have a smooth and controlled stroke that allows them to consistently get the ball close to the hole, even if they do not always sink the putt. By practicing this technique, you can improve your distance control and become more confident in your putting abilities.

Kellie Stenzel, a renowned golf instructor and Top 100 Teacher, emphasizes the importance of mastering speed control in putting. With her expertise and experience, she helps golfers at the Palm Beach Par 3 and The Boca Raton in Florida improve their putting skills and become more consistent on the greens. By implementing her tips and techniques, golfers can refine their stroke mechanics and develop a better understanding of how to adjust their speed for different putt lengths.

In conclusion, dialing in your speed is crucial for becoming a proficient putter from a distance. By understanding the relationship between backstroke length and stroke speed, you can simplify your putting technique and improve your consistency on the greens. Practice the simple exercise of counting steps to determine the appropriate backstroke length for each putt, and focus on completing your backstroke before smoothly transitioning to the forward motion. With dedication and guidance from experts like Kellie Stenzel, you can enhance your putting skills and lower your scores on the golf course.
