Hokkaido, Japan, is a hidden gem for golf enthusiasts, offering a unique and unforgettable golf experience. While the PGA Tour is making waves in Tokyo, Hokkaido’s golf adventure is waiting to be explored by avid golfers. Known for its snowy mountains and hot springs, Hokkaido transforms into a golfer’s paradise during the summer and fall months, offering 150 golf courses with stunning views and a temperate climate that sets it apart from other parts of Japan and Asia.

One of the best courses to start your Hokkaido golf trip is the Nidom Classic Course, located just 45 minutes from Sapporo. Surrounded by a lush forest, this course has hosted prestigious championships and offers a challenging yet beautiful golfing experience. Other notable courses in Hokkaido include the Niseko Golf Course, designed by Arnold Palmer, and the Hokkaido Classic Golf Club, a Jack Nicklaus design inspired by Muirfield Village. Each course in Hokkaido offers a unique golfing experience, from traditional layouts to modern amenities like self-driving golf carts and robot grass mowers.

After a round of golf, don’t miss the opportunity to relax at one of Hokkaido’s famous onsens, natural hot springs that are a staple of Japanese life. These onsens can be found in every town in Hokkaido, offering a rejuvenating post-golf soak that will leave you feeling refreshed. For a more adventurous experience, explore the wild onsens located in forests, on the edge of lakes, and even in intertidal zones. These natural hot springs provide a unique way to unwind and connect with nature after a day on the golf course.

In addition to traditional golf, Hokkaido is also known for its Park Golf, a shorter version of the game that is popular among older Japanese players. With 800 Park Golf courses in Hokkaido alone, visitors can experience this local pastime and settle any outstanding golf wagers in a fun and light-hearted manner. Park Golf courses can be found throughout Hokkaido, making it easy for golfers to try their hand at this unique and entertaining version of the game.

For those looking to explore more of Hokkaido’s natural beauty, there are plenty of outdoor adventures to be had outside of golf. From whale watching tours in Rausu to Japanese whiskey tastings at Akkeshi Distillery, Hokkaido offers a diverse range of activities for visitors to enjoy. Fishing enthusiasts can also try their luck on Lake Akan, where rainbow trout and Japanese char await. And for a truly authentic experience, don’t miss the chance to sample local oysters at one of the many oceanside bars in town.

Getting to Hokkaido is easy with flights from major U.S. cities to New Chitose Airport, where visitors can connect in Tokyo before reaching their final destination. With favorable exchange rates and affordable airfares, now is the perfect time to plan a golf trip to Hokkaido and experience all that this hidden gem has to offer. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or looking to try something new, Hokkaido’s pristine courses, breathtaking scenery, and warm hospitality are sure to make your golf getaway an unforgettable experience.
