Golf consumes baseball legend Mike Schmidt

Mike Schmidt, a Hall of Famer in baseball, ended his 18-year career in 1989 and shifted his focus to golf. He started devoting his time to the sport in his late 40s in hopes of making it on the senior tour. However, he acknowledges that he didn’t focus enough on putting and chipping during his practice sessions. Schmidt believes in the philosophy of changing your approach to get different results, a principle that he applies to all aspects of his life.

Born in September 1949, Schmidt shares a lot in common with fellow athlete Tom Watson. He achieved great success in baseball, winning numerous accolades, including 10 Gold Glove awards. Schmidt draws parallels between himself and Watson, highlighting their similarities in upbringing, character, and confidence. He exudes a strong sense of self-assurance, believing that he could have helped Michael Jordan with his hitting skills during Jordan’s brief baseball career.

Schmidt’s approach to both baseball and golf was methodical and cerebral, characterized by a focus on mechanics, worry, and fear of failure. He draws a comparison to Tiger Woods, suggesting that they both faced similar struggles. Schmidt identifies with Woods’ constant battle with mechanics and insecurity, recognizing the pressure and challenges that come with being at the top of the sport. He observes that Woods, like himself, often appeared consumed by worry and fear on the golf course.

During major championships, Schmidt notes how Woods would struggle with his opening drive despite a near-perfect warmup session. He believes that the mental aspect of the game played a significant role in both their careers. Schmidt’s deliberate approach to putting reflects his mindset during his baseball days, where strategy and focus were paramount. He emphasizes the importance of mental preparation and visualization in achieving success on the course.

Both Schmidt and Woods possessed physical attributes that suited their respective sports, with Schmidt’s strength and speed in baseball mirroring Woods’ core strength and flexibility in golf. Despite the challenges and uncertainties, Schmidt expresses confidence in his ability to have succeeded in golf, likening his determination to that of the true greats. His unwavering belief in his potential and willingness to adapt exemplify the mindset of a champion, transcending the boundaries of sports and showcasing the essence of a competitive spirit.
